À propos de ce contenu audio
"In another life, I’d call my father Baba. He’d have taught me Farsi, and I’d have retained a few phrases. He’d make me beef tongue sandwiches and we’d eat saffron-rosewater ice cream together for dessert. He’d be kind to Mom, and to me and Simon...And maybe I wouldn’t have seen ghosts. Maybe I wouldn’t have needed to."
In 1990, Helen Vogelsong-Donahue and her brother Simon were snatched away by their father and taken to Iran on Helen’s first birthday. They were rescued and returned to the U.S. a year later—but the events that comprised the early years of her existence resulted in the fear of a mysterious entity named Mr. Z, the Bogeyman: her own father.
Helen would spend the next two decades haunted by the possibility that her father would return. Her solace came in the form of ghosts who inhabited the rural Victorian homes of her childhood. The afterlife became a comforting fixation while real life felt increasingly more precarious. As she grew, the otherworldly continued to follow her through love, loss, and a sometimes painful search for meaning. Yearning for a sense of belonging, Helen grapples with her identity, the impossibility of her Iranian heritage—and what it truly means to live with ghosts.
Ghost Girl is a story of hauntings, both corporeal and supernatural; a tale of reclamation and redemption; and at its core, a deeply honest account of the messy, strange process of growing up.
