Mark Ablett is hosting a thoroughly pleasant summer party at his sprawling English country estate, the Red House. The guests are keeping themselves busy with golf, billiards and polite conversation. But the peaceful atmosphere shatters when Mark's estranged, black-sheep brother Robert arrives unexpectedly from Australia.
Shortly after Robert enters Mark's private study, a gunshot rings out. When the locked door is finally broken down, Robert is found dead on the floor, and Mark has vanished completely into thin air.
Enter Antony Gillingham, a charismatic stranger who happens to be passing the estate just as the chaos unfolds. Possessing a brilliantly logical mind and a thirst for adventure, Antony decides to play detective. Enlisting the help of a young guest named Bill Beverley to play his 'Watson', Antony sets out to unravel a labyrinth of secret passages, hidden motives and an impossibly perfect murder.
