À propos de ce contenu audio
For a century we built a shade we could not see.
Every furnace, every smelter, every ship burning heavy fuel oil has been putting particles into the air, and those particles reflect sunlight. For most of the industrial era our pollution has been cooling the planet, hiding some fraction of the warming our carbon was already causing. Now we are cleaning the air, and the shade is lifting.
How much heat was hidden? Nobody can yet say. The aerosol term is the largest single uncertainty in the whole of climate science, and serious researchers read the same satellite records, the same century of sunshine logs, the same fading ship tracks, and reach conclusions that differ by a factor of three.
The Clearing Air follows the argument down to its hinge: a haze that vanishes within days of the smoke stopping, a debt that arrives over decades, and a scientific dispute that will not be settled in time to be useful. It takes each side at its strongest, and it refuses to invent an ending the evidence has not reached.
Book Three of The Invisible Architecture.
