Content warning: This episode includes discussion of trauma, including childhood sexual abuse. We do not go into graphic detail, but we wanted to share a heads-up so you can decide what feels right for you to listen to.
Have you ever wondered whether your people pleasing is a learned habit—or whether your nervous system is trying to keep you safe?
In this episode, we explore the often-overlooked differences between people pleasing and the fawn response, including where they can come from, how they show up in our relationships, and why understanding the difference can matter for our healing.
We share our own experiences and reflect on how two people can display similar behaviours for very different reasons. From seeking approval and fearing rejection to automatically appeasing others when something feels unsafe, we unpack the role of social conditioning, trauma, and the nervous system in shaping how we navigate the world.
We also explore what healing can look like, from building awareness and practicing boundaries to nervous system support and trauma-informed therapy. Most importantly, we reflect on how these patterns may once have served a purpose—and how we can honour the ways we learned to protect ourselves while making space for something different.
As always, we’re approaching this conversation with curiosity rather than certainty, sharing what we’re learning about ourselves along the way.
A few questions to reflect on:
Where do you sit on the spectrum of people pleasing and fawning?
Are your behaviours rooted in social conditioning, or the result of trauma?
Do you feel a physical response to saying “No” or setting a boundary?
How present in your body do you remain in the presence of conflict?
Lastly, was this a new concept for you or simply confirming what you already knew?
We’d love to hear your reflections in the Spotify comments or over on Instagram. 💛
