Part 1: Why would Jesus choose a wedding running out of wine as the setting for His first sign? Dr. Chris Whyte, Pastor Rob Chifikoyo, and I explore the wedding at Cana, the significance of six stone purification jars, and what an extravagant amount of wine reveals about the glory of Jesus and the Kingdom He's bringing.

Water Into Wine: Why Was This Jesus' First Sign? (Part 1)

WDJD…T? - Why Did Jesus Do…That?

Jesus turns water into wine. It's one of the most familiar miracles in the Gospels, but have we ever stopped to ask why He did it?

In John's Gospel, this is Jesus' first sign. Not a dramatic healing or a public confrontation with religious leaders, but a wedding celebration where the hosts have run out of wine.

In Part 1 of this conversation, I'm joined by Dr. Chris Whyte and Pastor Rob Chifikoyo of Known Church in Oceanside, California, to explore the wedding at Cana and some of the details we tend to overlook.

Why does John tell us about six enormous stone jars used for purification? Why does Jesus tell His mother that His hour has not yet come? Why does He produce so much wine, and why is the best wine served last?

As we explore the cultural setting and the echoes of Isaiah, Amos, and Joel, we begin to see that this sign may be pointing toward something much larger than a wedding celebration: God's promised restoration, the abundance of His Kingdom, and the glory of Jesus revealed in an unexpected place.

And perhaps one of the most remarkable details is that Jesus' first sign preserves the honor of a family facing public shame.

Join us Tuesday for Part 2, when the conversation turns toward Rob's own story and how this passage has echoed into his life.

Scripture explored: John 1–2; Isaiah 25:6–9; Amos 9:13–14; Joel 3:18.

Referenced scholarship: Craig Keener, The Gospel of John; Richard Bauckham, Gospel of Glory.
