The world has a plan for many disasters but almost none for a threat that is far more likely to strike first.

A volcano does not have to be near anyone to hurt them. The largest eruptions throw sulfur into the upper atmosphere and dim the sun across the whole planet. Harvests then die on continents that never felt the ground shake. After Tambora exploded, snow fell in summer and bread prices exploded. Food riots spread and famine followed, and nobody alive knew why.

The real scandal is that the warnings usually come in time. Scientists drew a hazard map that put a Colombian town directly in the path of disaster, and the town was buried anyway. A Caribbean city was told it was safe while the mountain above it rained ash. Minutes later it was gone. Again and again the mountain warned, and people stayed.

Today the stakes are global. Modern life runs on air travel, long supply chains and a few breadbasket regions. One ash cloud from Iceland has already emptied the skies over Europe. A large enough eruption in the tropics could cut harvests on several continents at once and send food prices soaring everywhere. Many of the most dangerous volcanoes on Earth are barely watched at all.

How Frankenstein was born in the gloom of a volcanic winter
How a jumbo jet lost every engine inside an invisible cloud of ash
Why Mount St. Helens blew out sideways instead of up
How Iceland held back a river of lava with seawater
Why Yellowstone is not the volcano scientists worry about most

The mountain always warns first. History is the record of who listened.
