What does it really mean to be a great sports mom—and how can we help our kids grow without getting caught up in the pressure to win? Luke and Jean sit down with former college volleyball player, coach, and Positive Play Project founder Morgan Schill to talk about the challenges of navigating youth sports today. From an intense third-grade basketball game that got a little too serious to the difference between holding kids to high standards and putting too much pressure on them, Morgan shares why competition and fun don’t have to be at odds. She also challenges parents to get intentional about what they want their kids to gain from sports, beyond wins, losses, and playing time.
Morgan introduces the idea of “letting them carry the bag”—giving kids age-appropriate responsibility so they can develop accountability, confidence, and resilience instead of having parents step in to solve every problem. The conversation also explores why more women in coaching and sports leadership can make a meaningful difference, especially in creating supportive environments where girls feel understood and want to keep playing. Because youth sports are about so much more than the scoreboard; they’re an opportunity to build character, strengthen relationships, and develop life skills that last long after the final whistle.
