A single dry child's Mary Jane sat on a soaked sidewalk at 7:40 AM on February 11, 2009 - size four, patent-leather, not damp and gone forty minutes later. What connects that impossibly dry shoe to an eight-year-old who died of smoke inhalation seventy-one years earlier beneath the same wall?
In this episode, we follow the municipal archivist who assembled a paper trail spanning nearly five decades and four owners of the same building to describe a repeating, unexplained phenomenon; how did objects appear dry on wet surfaces, every February, and then vanish?
Person: Carl Coleman
Person: Rebecca Tucker
Person: Margaret Deane
Date: February 11, 2009
Location: 414 Pratt Street, Dellwood, Ohio
- At 7:40 AM on February 11, 2009, Carl Coleman found a child's white patent-leather Mary Jane, size four, dry on a wet sidewalk.
- Forty minutes after Coleman first saw the shoe, it was gone when he returned.
- The building at 414 Pratt was built in 1919 and served as a boarding house through the late 1940s before becoming a funeral home.
- On February 9, 1938, eight-year-old Margaret Deane died of smoke inhalation in the boarding house basement near the furnace beneath the east wall.
- The 1938 fire report listed two white patent-leather shoes size four among Margaret's recovered belongings, with a marginal note stating "Mother asked that the shoes be left."
