A billion-dollar data center is coming to town. Great. But where does the billion dollars actually go?
Announcements about new data centers often come with enormous numbers: billion-dollar investments, new construction, jobs, tax revenue and economic growth.
But a billion-dollar project doesn't mean a billion dollars lands in the local economy.
In this edition of Words from the Tailgate, Rick Hoppe follows the money.
How much stays in the community? How much leaves immediately to purchase specialized equipment and services somewhere else? How much circulates through local workers and businesses? And what does the community spend in return on electricity, water, roads, housing, emergency services and other infrastructure?
That leads to an important distinction between economic growth and economic development.
A community can attract an enormous investment and unquestionably grow economically. But whether that growth actually improves the lives of the people who live there is a different question.
Data centers aren't automatically good for a community.
They aren't automatically bad, either.
The numbers in the announcement simply aren't enough to tell us.
So before celebrating a billion-dollar investment, there's a much simpler question worth asking:
Where's the money?
And ultimately an even bigger one:
If development doesn't make the community a better place to live, what exactly have we developed?
Words from the Tailgate is a shorter, more personal companion to Beneath the Obvious: one question, no guest, and about ten minutes to follow the evidence wherever it leads.
Look beneath the obvious. Ask different questions.
