In which the young travellers fall into an unexpected detainment as witnesses against a captured highwayman whose clever escape allows them to resume their journey, only to face a nocturnal scare caused by a half-asleep recruiting sergeant. Their subsequent lodging at the home of a scholarly but shrewd schoolmaster, who entertains them with classical learning and hearty fare, ends in a costly quarrel over an exorbitant bill, revealing the practical hardships and humours of life on the road.
