The Golden Country - Based on the facts of the persecution of Japanese Christians in the 17th century, the play asks the question why the Superior of the Jesuits there apostatised. It also presents the conflict between an eastern and a western culture - a conflict which Japan then, as now, found it hard to resolve.
A Forty Year Old Man - With Suguro, a Catholic, lies in a hospital bed awaiting his third serious operation on the eve of his 40th birthday. Even if he survives, he is not sure that his marriage will.
