À propos de ce contenu audio
ASSISTANT WANTED: Notorious, high-ranking villain seeks loyal, levelheaded assistant for unspecified office duties, supporting staff for random mayhem, terror, and other Dark Things In General. Discretion a must. Excellent benefits.
With ailing family to support, Evie Sage's employment status isn't just important, it's vital. So when a mishap with Rennedawn's most infamous Villain results in a job offer—naturally, she says yes. No job is perfect, of course, but even less so when you develop a teeny crush on your terrifying, temperamental, and undeniably hot boss. Don't find evil so attractive, Evie.
But just when she's getting used to severed heads suspended from the ceiling and the odd squish of an errant eyeball beneath her heel, Evie suspects this dungeon has a huge rat . . . and not just the literal kind. Because something rotten is growing in the kingdom of Rennedawn, and someone wants to take the Villain—and his entire nefarious empire—out.
Now Evie must not only resist drooling over her boss but also figure out exactly who is sabotaging his work . . . and ensure he makes them pay.
After all, a good job is hard to find.
Contains mature themes.

When I chose this audiobook, I was only expecting a nice little fairy tale to pass the time. Little did I know that I would be taken hostage by the characters' chemistry, banter and yearning (and I'm talking about all of them not just the protagonists). They all seem to have their own voice, habits and agency contributing to the plot.
Plot that doesn't seem to be high-stakes at first but keeps on getting more and more interesting throughout the book. We investigate along with Evie and it's very pleasant to be given this opportunity instead of having the narrator try to catch the reader off-guard by dropping a random culprit and call it a plot twist.
Talking about Evie, I found it easy to like her. Her self-deprecating humor sounds authentic and is definitely not a cry for help. She is aware of her limits but full of hopes for herself and everyone she loves. And that's what drives her to find solutions without waiting for people to join in. I must admit that the peculiar way her mind works made me laugh out loud a few times and that's something precious (and probably one of the reasons the Villain loves her).
The Villain. Against his own will, I'm sure, he's another reason why this book was so funny. Beyond the fact that Evie finds him handsome, the fact that he presents as a sort of fantasy Batman forced to work with a team of loud unruly flamboyant characters is everything to me. He seems almost constantly overwhelmed by the actions of his subordinates while still trying very hard to act like the bad guy. Very very funny workplace comic situations (or maybe it's just MY kind of humor, I don't know, I hope not).
Oh yeah and : the yearning and out of the blue turn of events will make you giggle, kick your feet and ask for more.
So yeah. Wasn't expecting to have this much fun. Sorry Hannah, I won't doubt you again.
As for the performance, I really liked the voice of the actress. I think her pitch goes well with Evie.
However, I would have loooved it if the Villain POV was played by a male voice. Maybe for the next edition (fingers crossed ><).
Fresh unassuming quirky fairy tale
