In the fifth year of World War II the Nazi stranglehold on Europe seemed unbreakable. Then, it was June 6th, 1944.
After landing at Normandy, the Allies pushed the Nazis back across France. A total Allied victory and complete Nazi defeat seemed tantalizingly close. Those in power thought it was all but over. Planning for a postwar world was in progress. In the safest and most secure military bases in the US mainland, the feeling was that the war was won, the Nazis defeated.
