Description

Audible narration by Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld)

On the eve of Earth’s destruction, a young scientist discovers something too precious to lose, in a story of cataclysm and hope by the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Divergent trilogy.

It’s only two weeks before an asteroid turns home to dust. Though most of Earth has already been evacuated, it’s Samantha’s job to catalog plant samples for the survivors’ unknowable journey beyond. Preparing to stay behind and watch the world end, she makes a final human connection.

As certain doom hurtles nearer, the unexpected and beautiful potential for the future begins to flower.

Veronica Roth’s Ark is part of Forward, a collection of six stories of the near and far future from out-of-this-world authors. Each piece can be read or listened to in a single thought-provoking sitting.

Commentaires

"Narrator Evan Rachel Wood portrays Samantha in a soft, resigned tone that fits a story in which humanity has already been through the painful grieving process and has settled into a somber acceptance of its fate...it’s the gentle emphasis Wood gives to the connections between humans that makes this audiobook such a compelling listen." --AudioFile magazine

"…A sensational project...." --Spine Magazine

“This is exactly how I like my techno-anxiety.... Happy bingeing!” --Audible, an October Editors Pick

Couldn’t Finish

Slow and boring! The narrator’s voice was so slow it could have put me to sleep. With 20 minutes left, I was so irritated I just abandoned it. I don’t know how it ends, and I really don’t care! Hoping the others in this series are better than this one.....😴😑

OMG let me save you an hour of your life

this is not a spoiler because this story is horrible.

it's the end of the world and humanity has evacuated to another planet at the last minute someone discovers a new flower the end.

how does garbage like this get curated? is it the idea of curating to select good stories for a collection? dammit?

A jewel of a story

A delicate, precise narrative read with sensitivity and grace. Set against epic change, this is a beautifully personal and intimate portrait. Highly recommended.

A beautifully written short story of the end.

I listened to Ark back on the day it was released and I enjoyed it. Listening to it again many months later and I love it. Veronica Roth's vivid descriptions and deep thoughts on the end of the world are beautifully dark. This story is worth every minute.

Great Story

Without spoiling anything, the story centered around the people who had to work on the project and not the creatures. Nice take on an old subject. Makes you think about how you would behave under those circumstances.

A touching story in the face of impending disaster

A large asteroid is hurtling toward Earth, with destruction of life on Earth the certain result. With enough warning, two ships have been built to move humans and the life they need to survive off the planet.

Samantha is a young scientist cataloging plants to accompany the evacuating humans. With just a few weeks to go, she has her own private plans for what she'll do when she's supposed to board the ship she's assigned to.

Then, unexpectedly, she makes a real, human connection with one of the older scientists, who loves orchids as she does, and as her mother did.

It's a touching and moving story. Recommended.

I bought this audiobook.

Noah's space ark

Short and sweet. Very relevant for the times... Now that we can build a Noah's Ark spaceship, we should; and there's no telling what wonders well find along the way...

Poignant tale of the appreciation of now

This story is an exquisite examination of the beautiful fragility of life. The character arc of the protagonist carries us along on her journey through loss and dread at the end of the world. With delicate care, the author contrasts the icy cold of a barren landscape against the subtleties of Orchidaceae. I recommend this story to anyone who appreciates gentle tales of awareness reminiscent of Clifford Simak's finest.
