Description

New York Times best-selling author Jill Shalvis returns to Wildstone with the touching story of finding your place in the world - and the people who make it home.

Piper Manning’s about as tough as they come, she’s had to be. She raised her siblings and they’ve thankfully flown the coop. All she has to do is finish fixing up the lake house her grandparents left her, sell it, and then she’s free.

When a massive storm hits, she runs into a tall, dark and brooding stranger, Camden Reid. There’s a spark there, one that shocks her. Surprising her further, her sister and brother return, each of them holding their own secrets. The smart move would be for Piper to ignore them all, but Cam unleashes emotions deep inside of her that she can’t deny, making her yearn for something she doesn’t understand. And her siblings…well, they need each other.

Only when the secrets come out, it changes everything Piper thinks she knows about her family, herself…and Cam. Can she find a way to outrun the demons? The answer is closer than she thinks - just as the new life she craves may have already begun.

A gazillion stars!

I listened to the audio version of this book and the narration by Erin Mallon was superb and enhanced the story greatly. I love her gravely male voices.
Truly, anything by Jill Shalvis is fantastic. She is able to take stories to a level that just wows me. Her characters are fantastic, the problems are real and the solutions hard fought. The romance is always heart warming but hysterical at the same time. Throw in animals and I'm sucked in hook, line and sinker.
Loved. A gazillion stars!

Nice change of pace

This was a refreshing change of pace from the murders, rapes, crime sprees and horror novels that are in just about every book you read.

Disappointed

I have really enjoyed this series. I even just listened to all of it leading up to the release of this one and enjoyed them as much the second time around. This one was for me a big disappointment. The only people I liked were Piper and Cam. I get that the “kids” had a terrible childhood and experienced tremendous loss. They experienced horrors that no one should ever have to live through and they are all emotionally scarred as a result. Piper, the oldest sibling is incredible. She is only a few years older than her brother and sister and yet does any and everything within her power to raise them after the loss of their parents and grandparents. She gives up any and every dream she has to send them out into the world. She sees to it that they are fed, clothed have a roof over their heads and even sacrifices her own wants and needs to get them to college so they can be fully formed adults. Just as she is ready to finally start to realize the one dream she has ever had for herself the joke is on her. Both of her siblings show up on because they are selfish obnoxious children who cannot see or imagine anything except what they want. They have withheld important info on their lives because they don’t want to hear her comments? Stop doing stupid self destructive things and grow the heck up! They throw back in her face all she has done for them and then after they have both monumentally screwed up their lives come running back home and expect her to be there for them as she always has been. They don’t even ask her how she is or what she wants. They just make fun of her for her journals and being too uptight to keep a man. Nice! They are awful horrible people. The brother at least goes to work to help out. The younger sister, who is hiding her pregnancy is going to help by watching YouTube videos to “fix stuff”? Seriously, get off your behind, get a job and grow the heck up. Plus, the narration, which was overall good was horrible for her and exacerbated what a woman child she was. And that she asked everyone around her to keep it a secret from the sister who always took care of her, well that put me over the edge. They ultimately get themselves together and realize they need to appreciate and thank Piper, but by the time they get there it was too late for me. I listened to the last chapter and epilogue and thought how I was really happy they removed their collective heads from the behinds, but was equally happy it was over. This book was torture for me. If not for Cam would have stopped listening a few chapters in. How he survived his own awful childhood and man child of an irresponsible idiot father is a huge surprise as well. So not up to par of the rest of the series.
