Description

Alcohol Explained is the definitive, ground-breaking guide to alcohol and alcoholism. It explains how alcohol affects human beings on a chemical, physiological, and psychological level, from those first drinks right up to chronic alcoholism. Alcoholism and problem drinking seems illogical to those on the outside; indeed, it is equally perplexing for the alcoholic or problem drinker. This audiobook provides a logical, easy-to-follow explanation of the phenomenon and detailed instructions on how to beat it. Despite being entirely scientific and factual in nature, the audiobook is presented in an accessible and easily understandable format.

"This is an excellent book written by an inquisitive and educated author who during a period of his life suffered from alcoholism. The book explains in an easily understood language the various effects that alcohol has on our body. In my opinion the text would serve as a great handbook not only for those struggling with alcohol but also medical students as part of their education. I am sure some of my own patients troubled with alcoholism in recent years could have benefited from reading William’s book and I will be recommending it going forward." - Håvard Molvik, MD, MRCS, MSc, MRCGP

I wish I had discovered it earlier...

it could have helped my grandma who has been an alcoholic for at least 50 years... I must find out if it has been translated into other languages (French for instance). thank you Mr Porter for sharing experience and knowledge on that matter!

Transformational

This book is so effective at making the reader/problem drinker understand that there is absolutely no benefit to drinking even moderately. I find it is a whole new level of effectiveness compared to AA.

An appropriate title

AE is a great book on the effects of alcohol and how those effects influence the human body and social spectrum. More importantly, William shines a light on how little we know about those effects, and how that ignorance has lead to a society where many people defend their ignorance in the name of fun. I especially enjoyed the chapter on how the brain reacts to alcohol, after it's become used to it. Like the ability to remember the street you grew up on as a child, your brain carves similar pathways when it comes to alcohol. Only instead of the pathways being beneficial--knowing your way home--they become detrimental. If you're reading this and have become the type of person where the idea of drinking only 1 or 2 drinks for the night is unacceptable, this book will explain why. And in a way that's palatable. If you've been a binge drinker or heavy drinker for years, and you want to stop, but don't like the woo woo mysticism of AA, this book can be a cannon in your arsenal. It explains well the effects of quitting drinking, and why even having one drink can lead to full blown relapse; often worse than before.

Life Changing

I found this book after completing Annie Grace’s excellent audiobook This Naked Life. I was watching Annie’s online video where she interviews William Porter about alcohol, his research regarding alcohol and addiction, and his personal experience with alcohol and addiction. I found him to be bright, well-spoken and relatable, so I searched out this book. If you are interested in understanding your own drinking or you are thinking of moderating or giving up alcohol altogether, this is an excellent resource. I went into my reading of Annie Grace’s book with a hope to figure out a better way to moderate my drinking but quickly had an epiphany that the real solution to my struggle to moderate was to stop drinking altogether. This is a decision that is shocking to everyone who knows me. I’m not some raging alcoholic, not even close, so people are confused. But they don’t know how hard I have been struggling for years to moderate my drinking. The goals I set, the internal negotiations I go through, the decisions I make about not keeping extra wine in the house or putting a lock on my liquor cabinet to keep me out of it — the effort, the energy the battle to stay a moderate social drinker has been exhausting. And despite my diligence, I overindulged at least once a week and would wake up hungover and full of self- loathing and regret. Finally, with the help of this book and Annie Grace’s books I understand what I need to do, it’s so clear to me, so obvious. I just have to stop. So I have. I am alcohol free and so happy about it! It’s like I’ve been released from an invisible jail that I didn’t even know I was in! Thank you William Porter for writing bb this book. You have literally changed my life!

Great education on how alcohol affects our body

Very informative book! I have learned so much and was frankly amazed at the extremely negative way that alcohol robs us of our health and so much more. Thank you for taking the time to write this book! It certainly has made a positive impact on my life, it is a MUST read for ANYONE who drinks!

Concerned about your alcohol intake?

If you’ve ever been concerned about how much you drink and what alcohol is doing to your mind, body and spirit, I encourage you to read (or listen to) this book! It certainly opened my eyes to what I have been doing to myself... I have only been 28 days alcohol free... but this book cements the idea that is the way I want to live from now on! I will no doubt listen to this book several more times!

it helped me understand a lot better!

I read this book to get a better understanding of what my boyfriend, who is an alcoholic is going through. I thought I knew it all already, but I had a lot of aha moments reading this book. I wish the author dove into the depression side of alcoholism a little bit more and not just saying "to just seek the advice from a Dr," like every4one else does.
