    Description

Ahren can hardly believe his luck. His normal life consists of being beaten up by his drunkard father or bullied by the village lads. But at the annual suitability tests for apprenticeships, the young boy finds himself selected by Falk, the guardian of the forest, to be his apprentice and his world is turned upside down.

From his new master he learns the skills of archery and how to fight the Dark Ones. And then, on the day of the Spring Ceremony there is another unexpected turn of events. He touches the Stone of the Gods and it illuminates for the first time ever. It isn't long before a cantankerous wizard turns up and urges Falk and Ahren into action. There is no time to waste, for something evil is awakening.

The unlikely trio begin their dangerous journey to Evergreen, the elfish kingdom to get the elves' help. But time is running out. He, Who Forces has his eyes trained on Ahren and nothing will stop him from destroying the young man.

    Worth the listen

One review I read criticized this book for being a cookie cutter fantasy title. But the first cookie is just as tasty as the tenth. Don’t pass this book up. It really was quite good and enjoyable.

A series you need to see or hear

What a great story, it develops the characters well, and you feel as though you are right there with them, following them on their adventures. I have spent many hours with quivering ears as i listen to what happens next. I am positive this will be a best seller and i say with due humility, only a fool would pass this story by without reading or listening. They will miss being away from reality while being swept away into a world of adventure and excitement if for only a while, but oh what a journey it is.

    Impressively Unimaginative

    Cookie cutter fantasy
    Entirely too predictable
    Pretty boring as well
    Liked the voice actor though

    Poor man's John Flanagan

This book reminded me of the Ranger's Apprentice series. At least in the first half. The story was well written with enjoyable characters , engaging plot, and uniqueness that made you want to explore more. For the first half.
At about the halfway mark this book flips to one of the worst books I've read. The characters change to two-dimensional facades dragged along because plot needs it. The wizard character introduced is annoying lacking any real comedy or reasoning for his grumpiness. The mythos of the story falls apart mid way through also. Often times undermining previously established rules.
The character in which the book is named after doesnt grow at all. He has a false growth near the end which was forced and lacked any emotional connection to the reader.

I would not recommend this book. If yoy do desire to read it, I would suggest cutting it off midway and pretend that is the end of the book

    Overall good

I enjoyed the way the author drew the picture and colored the world he created. The book was what I expected and was looking for. An adventure book that is an easy read/listen. It is a firm YA book so don’t expect super deep context however. For what it was it’s a good if not great YA book from a new writer.

worth your credits and your time.

let my say that I usually review the first book in a series last. after all the question you are trying to answer is "should I read the series?".

let me say that is is not an death shattering tour de force, or the magnum opus destined to greatness through history. what it is, is a damn fun series that is well written, without being formulaic.

its a hero's journey archetype of fantasy but does it right by focusing on that personal and internal journey. to many book try to skip past the growth of the main character to get right to the " I'm bad ass jesus-kun, tremble in fear" self inset wankery. this story does NOT do that. intact it focuses on the character and their changes extremely well.

at no point in the series did I think the main character was acting out of character, and at no point did he just "poof" up and change. Even so, reading back to the first book I find the character unrecognizable. the change was so slow and subltle over time, and yet such a large change at the end.

spend the credits and enjoy the series.

    A Worthwhile Read

If you prefer a well rounded story with some action then this is a great book for you. If you prefer a lot of action with scant development of the characters then you probably will not enjoy this book. The story starts off a little slow but holds your interest because you are seeing the development of Ahren. Then once the story has your full attention as you begin the adventure.

    Nostalgic, classic, but NEW

If you don’t want to read something long:
This is by far one of the best coming of age books I’ve ever read and I am very excited to see where the rest of the story goes from here.

    For something longer:
Torsten Weitze does an amazing job with spinning our most classic tales and creatures while still keeping some aspects that make them familiar and comfortable. In my opinion, he also does an amazing job at reminding the readers that Ahren is a young boy who is slowly becoming a young man - especially with his use of emotions. I also adore that his mentor figure Falk is shown to have flaws of his own.

On top of that, it is greatly appreciated that the common perception of males leading everything isn’t so prominent. I was happy to see the “masters and mistresses” and other mutual titles used and even more happy when it continued to persist. Don’t let this mislead you into thinking that his female characters are not feminine in their own rights. I cringe when I see authors pushing strong female characters into more masculine personalities and types, but Torsten Weitze balances it well. The best balance I’ve seen in a long time.

    Dont buy, Dont read

I regret buying this book without doing a bit more research. This is one of those milion books out there with lack of originality. Just a copy of concepts of others - but not a great copy.
