    Description

An unexpected love story from Marc Levy, international bestselling author of The Last of the Stanfields, and the most widely read French author in the world.

It’s been five years since fate upended resilient Chloe Bronstein’s world. While she may be living with her father, and her acting career has taken a decidedly unexpected turn, she’s alive. And she’s intrigued by Sanji, the charming new elevator operator in her quaint Manhattan apartment building. There’s just something about the Mumbai-born, Oxford-educated, thoroughly modern elevator man that doesn’t quite add up.

Sanji is dazzled by Chloe. They have so much in common: Both defiant. Both independent. Both determined to live by their own rules. But there’s one thing about Sanji that Chloe doesn’t know. Yet.

However hesitant Chloe and Sanji’s burgeoning romance is - complicated by family, friends, neighbors, and the past - it also awakens them to life’s limitless possibilities.

Unforgettable characters and a superb story

I stayed up way too late just to finish this book. And then I bought a Kindle copy because I want to read it as well. These characters will stay with me for a long time. The story is equally impressive, with constant little twists and turns that make it ever more interesting and that I didn’t see coming. This is one of those books that I will gift to a number of people because it is so appealing, yet also gentle and soothing. A new favorite author to be sure!

    Pleasantly Surprised

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel as a testament to love, endurance, and strength of the human condition. The narration was fantastic and made all the difference over reading. It was humorous, sad, and the characters were very real. At times I felt a strong resemblance to a Frederick Bachman novel. The story would have rated 5 stars had the author left out his efforts to express his own political views. For this reader, it ruined an otherwise lovely and heartwarming story.

    Distracting narration

When male narrators attempt to do female voices by talking unnaturally high, I find it a bit comical and a bit annoying. This one was very distracting. There was a female narrator also who occasionally voiced the part of Chloe (like maybe 5% of it) and the male narrator did the rest. I am not sure why. The story itself was all over the place and the love story was not fleshed out at all and unearned. A big “meh” on this one.

    Wonderful!

The story was great, the narrator's outstanding, and the characters were fascinating. The theme of family is very thought provoking. I loved it.

    Unique and enjoyable story

I really enjoyed this story. The plot was unique with the perfect combination of predictability and surprise twists. Overall the performance was great but a couple times it was difficult to tell who was supposed to be talking based on the narrator's voices.

    Great Romance With Great Characters

I love the writing of Marc Levy. I have read several of his novels and marvel at his way with words and the way his characters interact with each other. In this one he is using the current issues swirling around , especially the immigration issues and how America treats its citizens. This is a story about preconceived philosophies and how they harm us. The main character is an elevator operator in a swanky apartment building in New York City and how its residents turn on him when something interferes with their lives. Marc Levy’s books are a treat to read. You’will love his characters and the interaction. I listened in Audible and read. The narrators Neil Shaw and Megan Tusing did the narration and they brought the characters to life.

    Pure Enjoyment

This novel provides pure enjoyment. It's a delightful tale that provided me relaxation and entertainment with interesting characters. Beyond the enjoyment are issues worth thinking more about but the book doesn't insist you pay close attention to them.

    Very disappointing

The story had a lot of promise, but the main relationship was underdeveloped. The story arc didn’t feel right either.

On top of that, the male narrator’s impression of a female voice was breathy and irritating.

    As a former elevator operator...

To say this story is unusual and engaging doesn't come up to the level of surprise you experience. Can you even remember being in an elevator that needed an operator? I had that job in the '60s in a four-story department store. lol. Tension between cultures, economic classes and those with mobility impairments are mixed with romance and some rather innocent misunderstandings.

A mystery, a love story, and a character tale

A different kind of book, this novel manages to captivate by defying one set of genre rules. It's a love story, with several stories of romance developed, across generations. There's character development, with interesting personal challenges posed to the characters that call into question a reader's own prejudices and values. A mystery intrigues as a meta-whodunit unfolds. And the narrator throughout voices plot and dialogue with the conviction of a gifted actor. Very worthwhile.
