What follows is a collection of very old Zen stories. None of them are mine. They were told by teachers to students long before any of us were here, kept and repeated for centuries because each one does something quietly useful to the person who hears it. I have only opened a door in front of each one, and left you something small at the end.
This is the first of three short books. Each one can be listened to entirely on its own, but together they move in a particular direction. The first book, the one in your hands, is about rest. The second, Letting Go, is about the things we carry long after we could have put them down. The third, A Better Life, asks the wider question of how a person spends the time they are given. We begin with rest on purpose. When you have not slept, everything else is harder than it needs to be, so this is the foundation the rest is built on.
