I’ve been in this life for 50 years, been trying to work out its riddle for 42, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last 35. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me.

For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

With the end of the Cold War, the victory of liberal democracy was thought to be absolute. Observers declared the end of history, confident in a peaceful, globalized future. But we now know this to be premature. Authoritarianism first returned in Russia, as Putin developed a political system dedicated solely to the consolidation and exercise of power. In the last six years, it has creeped from east to west as nationalism inflames Europe, abetted by Russian propaganda and cyberwarfare.

Tara Westover was 17 the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches. In the summer she stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winter she salvaged in her father's junkyard. Her father forbade hospitals, so Tara never saw a doctor or nurse. Gashes and concussions, even burns from explosions, were all treated at home with herbalism. Then, lacking any formal education, Tara began to educate herself. Her quest for knowledge transformed her.

un récit autobiographique passionnant
- Écrit par : Cheerioh le 06/03/2019
Description
A riveting, deeply personal account of history in the making - from the president who inspired us to believe in the power of democracy
NUMBER ONE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NAACP IMAGE AWARD NOMINEE • NAMED ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW
NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The Washington Post • Jennifer Szalai, The New York Times • NPR • The Guardian • Marie Claire
In the stirring, highly anticipated first volume of his presidential memoirs, Barack Obama tells the story of his improbable odyssey from young man searching for his identity to leader of the free world, describing in strikingly personal detail both his political education and the landmark moments of the first term of his historic presidency - a time of dramatic transformation and turmoil.
Obama takes readers on a compelling journey from his earliest political aspirations to the pivotal Iowa caucus victory that demonstrated the power of grassroots activism to the watershed night of November 4, 2008, when he was elected 44th president of the United States, becoming the first African American to hold the nation’s highest office.
Reflecting on the presidency, he offers a unique and thoughtful exploration of both the awesome reach and the limits of presidential power, as well as singular insights into the dynamics of US partisan politics and international diplomacy. Obama brings readers inside the Oval Office and the White House Situation Room, and to Moscow, Cairo, Beijing, and points beyond. We are privy to his thoughts as he assembles his cabinet, wrestles with a global financial crisis, takes the measure of Vladimir Putin, overcomes seemingly insurmountable odds to secure passage of the Affordable Care Act, clashes with generals about US strategy in Afghanistan, tackles Wall Street reform, responds to the devastating Deepwater Horizon blowout, and authorizes Operation Neptune’s Spear, which leads to the death of Osama bin Laden.
A Promised Land is extraordinarily intimate and introspective - the story of one man’s bet with history, the faith of a community organizer tested on the world stage. Obama is candid about the balancing act of running for office as a Black American, bearing the expectations of a generation buoyed by messages of “hope and change”, and meeting the moral challenges of high-stakes decision-making. He is frank about the forces that opposed him at home and abroad, open about how living in the White House affected his wife and daughters, and unafraid to reveal self-doubt and disappointment. Yet he never wavers from his belief that inside the great, ongoing American experiment, progress is always possible.
This beautifully written and powerful book captures Barack Obama’s conviction that democracy is not a gift from on high but something founded on empathy and common understanding and built together, day by day.

Worse audiobook
What makes this the worse audiobook for me is that Obama in my opinion tries/attempts to be relatable yet comes out unrelatable. This made me question myself— is it because of my personal suffrage or my upbringing or experience in life and it’s endeavors. Why can’t I relate to this great man. Overall, the book feels unauthentic.

I'm crying and listening to this book. As a maid I can picture the cleaning crew and butlers joy serving for you. What an honor!! As a Jehovahs Witness it was nice the mention in your book. As a latina thank you for the César Chaver National Park. I can relate to your thoughts that so much history gets omitted in schools. A president from Hawaii with an aloha spirit.
This book is absolutely delightful! It will make you laugh, cry, and feel inspired. Obama tells a story of a his journey from being born in Hawaii raised without a father to becoming America’s first biracial African American president. As a fellow Hawaii native, this story and his legacy will always be held in a sacred place in my heart.

Amazing
I love memoirs and autobiographies read by the author, gives us such a personal connection to their minds to how a true leader should conduct himself or herself.
Heavy on financial reform, light on the 2016 election, and a good mix of personal anecdotes, although I wish he discussed life after the White House, which isn't mentioned at all.

An open and probably honest account.
I liked that Obama reads it himself. It makes it more personal and easy to listen to. Even though he talks about so many people that it is hard to keep up with who is who sometimes, it is very informative and filled with many interesting details. Sometimes he comes of too much as the awesome hero for my taste. But to become president and be president you probably to have to have a very healthy ego.

This autobiography presents the reflections of a highly intellectual man and a deeply empathic person on his family, his values, the office of the President and on his opponents. Obama‘s style is clear, entertaining and easy to listen to. The reader‘s /listener‘s rising anger at the Republicans for their constant obstruction is elegantly fuelled by Obama into an „OK,that‘s politics, but we have to make it better“ attitude. He gives an insight into his personal life but always combines it with what can be done for the general good. Can‘t wait for the second volume!

Langeweile ohne Ende.
Reine Selbstbeweihräucherung und Rechtfertigung. Für mich auch sehr langweilig. Mochte ihn vorher sehr, jetzt deutlich weniger.

MOST INSPIRING
Wonderful to have the author narrate the book himself and an excellent job doing so. one of the best biographies I've ever read, such integrity and inspiration. I have never had much interest in politics most of my 70 years but living in Germany there is a very small selection of English audible books, and this book with its 29 hours of listening pleasure was one of the few available. I enjoyed every minute of it and was sad when it ended. The only American President I would have liked to meet, I'm Irish and this man restored my faith in humanity. Well done Barack Obama, you were the best president ever

What a contrast!
It is great read from a very respectable leader. What is stunning how Americans could elect Donald Trump (and nearly re-elect him) after such an intelligent person at the helm…

Thank you Mr. President for all these insights
I learned alot about politics and how we all are human in any position we might have on the stage of our world, during these hours of listening to your sonorous voice. Thank you so much for your big heart and laser focused mind. Thank you for being so thoughtful and down to earth! I‘m now waiting for part 2 and wish you the bestest of the best for all the future projects you create. Thank you from Switzerland!!!

Yes we could have if there weren't the republicans
Going in I was already not the biggest fan of Obama and his politics. With so many deflections and excuses why he didn't do the things he promised that fact really didn't change. Maybe I die dreaming, but to compromise on bills on the fight against global warming for example until the words and agreements aren't worth the paper it is written on can't be acceptable!
He is still a great narrator and especially the early years before politics seemed to corrupted him are worth your time!
