Histoire
In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to 'bad people'" (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent meaningful cross-racial dialogue.

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

Description
Ove is almost certainly the grumpiest man you will ever meet. He isn't as young as he used to be. He drives a Saab. He points at people he doesn't like the look of. He is described by those around his as 'the neighbour from hell'.Every morning he makes his inspection rounds of the local streets. He moves bicycles and checks the contents of recycling bins, even though it's been years since he was fired as Chairman of the Residents' Association in a vicious 'coup d'état'.
But behind the surly pedant there is a story, and a sadness. And when on a November morning his new (foreign) neighbours in the terraced house opposite accidentally flatten Ove's letterbox, it sets off a comical and heart-warming tale of unexpected friendship which will change one man - and one community - from their very foundations. Quirky and bittersweet, heartbreaking yet outrageously funny, A Man Called Ove is a life-affirming fable for our times.

Perfect book
Would you listen to A Man Called Ove again? Why?
Yes. It was one of those books that I never wanted to finish. And when finished, I missed Ove and knew it would be hard to find a book I enjoyed as much.
What did you like best about this story?
Ove is a composite of people we all have known. He is an ethical curmudgeon but we are ever hopeful for some sign of compassion from him.
Have you listened to any of Joan Walker’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, but I will now look for other books she narrates. She has become one of my favorite narrators.
If you could take any character from A Man Called Ove out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Pavana would be an interesting character to have dinner with.
Any additional comments?
I listened to this book as I walked in the morning. There were times I laughed aloud and a couple times when I was teary-eyed. When I got home, after my walks, my husband would ask, "So, what's new with Ove today?"

A nice story (but nothing you've not read before)
A nice story, with loveable characters.
Although The events and story tropes are nothing new, it still tugs at your emotional strings at times.
I would've personally preferred if it had been shorter and focused more on the drama than anything else.
But all-in-all, a harmless, (sometimes emotional) story, worth picking up if there's no other books on your to-read list.

Grumpy old man with a big heart
Reading Fredrik Backman's "A man called Ove" makes you feel good. It is a moving story, it will make you laugh and maybe shed a tear now and then. Sometimes you might fear that it is getting close to become a little bit corny, but Fredrik Backman skillfully stays clear of that. Joan Walker is the perfect voice for this narrative and it is a pure pleasure to listen to her.
The heart and soul of the story is the grumpy old man, called Ove. When he lost his wife, his world fell apart and he became a broken man. He spends his days, inspecting the neighbourhood for misdemeanors or he is visiting the grave of his wife to talk to her. He became bitter and lonesome and since there is nothing left to do for him, he decides to end his life. Easier that than done, each and everytime he is prepared to do it, somebody needs his help. It might be a small freezing kitten, a helplesss neighbor, who cannot backup his trailer, a neighbor with a handicapped husband and so on. Ove's prickly appearance might fool you, he has a big heart and he will solve the problem.
All the characters in this story are drawn with so much love and detail, you will be tempted to look for them in your neighborhood. In a way they are stereotypes, but regardless of that, they form an enchanting kaleidoscope of todays urban society.
It is beautiful story, nicely told and the prose is more than adequate. It is simply a good book.
