Description

A librarian, a warrior woman, and a love story that's out of this world....

Holly tells herself that the reason she hasn't asked her girlfriend to move in (after four years of dating) is that she's too busy - but it isn't true. A very book-obsessed librarian, Holly has buried herself in so many romantic and magical stories, that at night, she dreams of a woman who will sweep her off her feet - something her indifferent girlfriend has never done. But one night, during an unusually vicious storm, magic and romance appear in Holly's backyard in the form of a mysterious, gorgeous woman...wielding a sword.

The dashing stranger's name is Virago. She claims that she's a warrior on the hunt for a great and terrible beast; that she, and the beast, slipped through a portal from their world into ours. Holly isn't sure what to believe, but she is now responsible for a (possibly crazy) swordswoman who is bewildered by modern-day conveniences like escalators, but not by the chivalry of sweeping a woman off her feet.

Can Holly help Virago find her own world again, or will that falling-in-love thing get in the way? And, of course, there's the tiny problem of the beast Virago wounded that is now seeking revenge....

A Knight to Remember is a light-hearted, fantastical romance that will take you on a journey you'll never forget.

Love the book and narration

This is not my first Bridget Essex book and won't be my last. I loved it and absolutely love that it is narrated! I've listened to it twice this week! The narration by Rose Clearwater was very good and it was easy to get lost in the characters and story. I hope more of Essex's books narrated!

Not bad but not my cup of tea

I really the way virago was portrayed but that was about it. The main character was too self involved and the supporting characters too one dimensional. I think I just expected more action since it was story about a knight, love and a beast but really the story line was mainly in the main characters head.
But I think if you are into stories that are very much 'head' and less story then it might be good. At least it is consistent in style.

Love the concept

I really love the idea of this book, and after reading the summary was excited. It not a bad book by any means but there was very little dialog in the book. it was mostly all inner dialog. I loved the lady knight and wish much more of the story focused on her. Like the concept but too much inner dialog and not enough interaction among the characters. This book had a wonderful chance to be lovely fairy tale between 2 women and I wish it had gone that way.

Sooo very repetitive.

Struggle is too small a word. I never leave a book unfinished but this one tempted me greatly. The narrator was very good but I could hardly tolerate one repeated sentence after another. The story was okay but was pretty much over after the first three chapters.

simple fun escapism.

a funny and romantic fish out of water meets hapless nerd. Overall an enjoyable experience that had a few standout scenes.

Pros:

Author is clearly writing from experience and it feels genuine when the characters talk about subjects that the author clearly went through herself.

the unashamed escapism of your literal perfect wish fufillment lover falling into your lap can be enjoyable when played for laughs.

The small details of the protagonists life make her schedule feel lived in and genuine.

A few small scenes hit home with their emotional poignecy. such as the breakup scene and some of the interactions with Carly.

Cons:

The "magic invading the real world" angle is not fully exploited and some characters reaction to magic being real feels underwhelming and unrealistic. Especially the ending scene of Holly coming face to face with a literal goddess and not really having any questions.

Descriptions are often redundant or reapeated. especially when it comes to describing Virago. She is described as graceful and sensual an unbearable amount of times, sometimes within the same paragraph.

Many plot events feel hollow as opportunities to tie characters actions to larger thematic motivators. Holly always being the 'knight' and longing to be the 'princess' is not brought up in the climax when Virago literally becomes a damsel in distress and Holly literally picks up her weapon to slay a beast. The emotional connection would ring truer if the arcs of the characters were directly tied into their actions but lots of plot events felt more impactful because of the thematic relavence I imagined they COULD have had.

Finally, Virago is oddly underutilized. Holly's feelings towards her feel purely motivated by lust, and the most emotionally resonate scenes were the breakup scene, and her memories of falling in love with Carly and being unable to be loved in return. for an escapist fantasy I felt more drawn to the story of Holly being betrayed and the bond with her friend that will only ever be her friend. Virago did not have enough reactions and interactions for her to feel like a genuine romantic interest.

Conclusion:

Despite some structural issues that hold the story back from being great, I still had fun listening and the narrator was very professional. would recommend.

Realistically Magical

After all the angst and constant description of the main character's infatuation it was great!

3.5 stars

Because the story drags a lot at points and basically when you’ve herd one of her stories you’ve herd them all.

I actually enjoyed the way this was read. They actually tried to bring the story to life with background in places and making it sound like an actual speaker for the joist
