We know what life was like for Victoria and Albert. But what was it like for a commoner like you or me? How did it feel to cook with coal and wash with tea leaves? Drink beer for breakfast and clean your teeth with cuttlefish? Dress in whalebone and feed opium to the baby? Surviving everyday life came down to the gritty details, the small necessities and tricks of living. Drawing on Ruth's unique firsthand experience gained from living on a Victorian farm for a year, this book will teach you everything you need to know about 19th-century living.

Histoire
England, 1879. Annabelle Archer, the brilliant but destitute daughter of a country vicar, has earned herself a place among the first cohort of female students at the renowned University of Oxford. In return for her scholarship, she must support the rising women's suffrage movement. Her charge: recruit men of influence to champion their cause. Her target: Sebastian Devereux, the cold and calculating duke of Montgomery who steers Britain's politics at the queen's command.
Description
"A graceful love story...and an authentic presentation of the 1860s that reads with the simplicity and visual gusto of a period movie." (Readers' Favorite)
A courtship of convenience.
Sophie Appersett is quite willing to marry outside of her class to ensure the survival of her family. But the darkly handsome Mr. Edward Sharpe is no run-of-the-mill London merchant. He's grim and silent. A man of little emotion - or perhaps no emotion at all. After two months of courtship, she's ready to put an end to things.
A last chance for love.
But severing ties with her taciturn suitor isn't as straightforward as Sophie envisioned. Her parents are outraged. And then there's Charles Darwin, Prince Albert, and that dratted gaslight. What's a girl to do except invite Mr. Sharpe to Appersett House for Christmas and give him one last chance to win her? Only this time, there'll be no false formality. This time, they'll get to know each other for who they really are.

A Beguiling Love Story!
I was thoroughly delighted by this charming story, even though I felt it was too short. I have been searching for another author, who could write luscious tales of a time past, without cramming it full of debauchery and lewdness. I am especially fond of the vocal artistry of Mr. Alex Wyndham having listened to him on at least ten other audiobooks. It was his voice that first drew me to this book, yet the author's writing is worthy on its own merit. I hope Ms. Matthews continues to utilize the talents of Mr. Wyndham, because it enhances the enjoyment of her book ten-fold. I hate to say this, but her previous narrator (I have two of those audio books also) is not as pleasing, nor has the depth of range, that Mr. Wyndham exhibits. Thanks for a lovely read.

Thoroughly enjoyable
I really enjoyed this book which did a great job of combining the different social classes in Victorian England. It reminded me very much of the mini series north and south from BBC. Ned Sharp is every inch John Thornton, at least in my mind. The author did a wonderful job of bringing out the practical as well as the romantic side of the story which I found very interesting indeed. It’s also clear that she did plenty of research – all the little historical touches really add to the story. Highly recommended!

Beautiful love story with a little history
I chose this book because I wanted to hear Alex Wyndham's sexy smooth voice. Mimi Matthews is a new author for me and I will read/listen to her books again. She is wonderfully talented at spinning a story and just as talented in her character development. And Alex Wyndham is chocolate icing on Mimi's cake. I so appreciate Mimi's keeping this story to 4 hours rather than going on and on and on.

The Best!!!
I have absolutely loved every audible and book I have read by the amazing Mimi Matthews. Her writing and storylines speak to me and are exactly what I enjoy. Throw in Alex Wyndham as narrator and it is mesmorizing!! He has the perfect tone and voices for the characters, especially the hero. All I can say is I long for more with this combination!!

Terribly uneven performance
The story is short and entertaining. Most characters are likable, and expertly sketched. Overall - quite a pleasant read.
The book also showcases a rare relationship based on believable growth of mutual respect and esteem, initiated by a pact of honesty and open communication. Very refreshing.
The performance, however, was terribly grating. For some characters and the main narrative every sentence ends on a weird tone, like a cross between a question and a surprised exclamation. It annoyed me so much I could hardly finish the book.

Like it was a real Victorian novel!
Fairly decent story, it reads like it was written in the Victorian age, and is well written.
Not much of a fan of the narrator. His speed was alright, but he sounded surprised most of the time, it didn't sound like there was a period at the end of the sentences. And he pronounced ''Appersett'' in a way I found annoying.

Delightful story, but moderate speaker
I really enjoyed listening to this novella. I loved to see, how the relationship between Sophie and Ned developed, once they gave the courtship a second chance with candid speaking to each other.
I didn‘t like the reader so much. Every each sentence ended on a high note, as if every one was an outrage - even when it was only some narrative text. This made for a little bit akward listening. Apart from that, he was well comprehensible, even for someone who has a foreign mother tongue.
