Description

Magic in the blood. Danger in the streets.

Lord Crane has never had a lover quite as elusive as Stephen Day. He knows Stephen's job as justiciar requires secrecy, but the magician is doing his disappearing act more than seems reasonable - especially since Crane will soon return to his home in China. When a blackmailer threatens to expose their illicit relationship, there's only one thing stopping Crane from leaving the country he loathes: Stephen.

Stephen has problems of his own. As he investigates a plague of giant rats sweeping London, his sudden increase in power, boosted by his blood-and-sex bond with Crane, is rousing suspicion that he's turned warlock. With all eyes on him, the threat of exposure grows. Stephen could lose his friends, his job, and his liberty over his relationship with Crane. He's not sure if he can take that risk much longer. Crane isn't sure if he can ask him to.

The rats are closing in, and something has to give....

From strong to even stronger

A fantastic story and a brilliant romance.

Everything great about the first of the series but with the refining and perfection needed to perfect the series. Any problems I had with the series are gone and everything I loved about the first book is even better in this instalment.

Well worth a read.

Just as good as the first!

Just like the title says. The characters are just as good and fun and interesting as the first book in this series. Plus character development and a good pace with a realistic source of villainy. I'm very pleased I found these books!

Romance and Mystery

Sometimes the sequel to a beloved book can be a disappointment, but that was NOT the case for the second book in A Charm of Magpies series. Now that Crane and Day are together, they need to figure out how to make their relationship work in a society that would imprison and ruin them for their love. Crane’s complete disdain of London’s sexuality laws, and Day’s deep fear of losing his friends and job are a source of tension between the two lovers. Trying to navigate that huge obstacle in their relationship while solving a mystery of attacking, giant rats, both Day and Crane will have to make some hard choices.

Once again, the characterizations of Crane and Day were well done and made me fall in love with them all over again. I love the dialogue between both men and how they work together both professionally and as lovers. This is a fantastic book and will definitely be a future re-read for me.

A well done period mystery, fun book cover

The reader did an excellent job performing the book. I thoroughly enjoyed the main characters relationship but the attitude of Stephen's co-workers was tiresome. They were officious dullards. The beginning of the story felt like it was missing a chapter.

Magical romantic mystery, part 2

A good sequel to the first book. People known to Crane start dying and of course the method is magic. As they stumble into then work to solve the mystery, Crane and Stephen make decisions about their nascent relationship. I happily went along for the ride. I liked it a lot but somehow it didn’t grab me as much as the first but I find it hard to explain why since it’s a well crafted story that evolves fluidly.

(Potential mild Spoiler in this paragraph attempting a reason for my lack of complete satisfaction.) Hrm. I do remember being annoyed that one target of the villain was neither a random test victim, a personal threat, nor at fault for past action but was the wife of an enemy. I get really tired of villains targeting wives to vent their spleens over a husband’s behavior. Despite a case being made for her as accessory to wrongdoing, she wasn’t the initiator or agent. The near ubiquitous practice of taking out wives, with or with or without taking out the husbands, to punish the *husband* as if one is taking away a toy rather than an independent life … grr, argh. The decision was being made by a vengeful person being mean, not by our heroes. A small adjustment to a sentence or two might have prevented my ire. Since the author is normally so careful about not treating people like trophies, it surprised and vexed me. (end /spoilers)

I do recommend the book. The continued bit with the tattoos remains a favorite detail. I really enjoy the loyalty and decision making of the heroes and their friends when faced with hard decisions and cross cultural taboos. (Meaning I don’t find myself yelling at characters for being obtuse, obstructionist, or withholding critical info at critical moments, which is a relief since my last read series caused some of that, prompting the switch to this series.) There is violence, killing, and giant rats tearing people to bits but on the whole conveyed to me an upbeat, optimistic feeling.

Steam: medium. slightly kinky (DS dynamic) sexy M/M sex happening on page, starting early since book one got the couple to “happy for now” (HFN) status. As the well crafted story it is, the sex exposes/contributes vital info and vitality to the emotional arc of the story. There is more of it here than in the first book.

Narration. Still like the narrator. With the caveat that I’m American with no firm knowledge of which British accents belong to which locales and classes, the narrator does adjust voicing and accents a bit in a way I mostly find suitable/helpful for ease of listening. The English with Shanghai accent made me a little uneasy but was not cartoonish so okay? Audio quality remains even & good.

Exciting with a new twist

The storyline and plotline were simply as well written, narrated and direct. at times breath takeingly exotic.

So enjoy this series!

This is such an entertaining series, even if it does creep me out a bit! And this one really creeped me out. Giant rats?!? No thanks!
I love Stephen and Lucien- such an odd pairing, but one that works really well. I was so glad to see how things progressed with their relationship.
There was a little confusion for me with this story, at least in the beginning. It seemed like there were a multitude of things happening, and nothing was coming together, until it finally did, and then it all started to make sense. This series really isn't for the faint of heart, with the violence and somewhat graphic descriptions, but I can't get enough of it.
I liked that we got to learn more of Lucien's past in this book, to see a little of his and Merrick's history from their time in China.
I enjoy how these stories are a mix of romance, mystery, suspense, and a bit of horror thrown in for good measure.

Cornell Collins is perfect for thes books. He truly performs each character, giving them their own personalities and quirks, keeping me enthralled throughout. I think I appreciate these books so much more thanks to him.

I really like this series

I loved the first book in this series, The Magpie Lord. It was the first time with this author and it was such a ride. This second book is ok, I love the characters and the writing very much. I enjoyed the continuing relationship of the MC. I didn't find this second book as interesting or exciting as the first, but I think this series is a must for people who enjoy a paranormal M/M story and enjoys historical pieces and a moody ambience also.

Too short to be called a book. Klune is better.

Good story but way too short to be called a proper book. Klune is better. More than half an hour preview at the end is cheating.
