Rebellious, curious, and never far from trouble, Clare is unlike her goody-two-shoes sister and a constant disappointment for her strict, religious parents.
To change her behaviour, Clare is sent to stay with Master Michael, a family friend, schoolteacher, and strict Christian. There, her responsibilities will include looking after his new arrival and spreading the word of God.
When Clare arrives, however, it seems that Master Michael is not quite the symbol of innocence she has always been led to believe, and his idea of rehabilitation is not quite what she had in mind.
