Rural Western Maryland. Labor Day weekend 1991.
Angela Madigan is a tightly structured clinical psychologist with a thriving private practice. One careless night she leaves her lover's cabin in a fit of rage and becomes hopelessly lost on an isolated mountain road in Western Maryland. Its late. There's a sliver of moon hanging over a dark, lonely night. She's been driving for hours searching for a way off the mountain, or back to the cabin, but she sees nothing but squiggly curve warning signs and mile markers. She's going up the mountain instead of down. She grows frantic fueled by panic. The road grows narrower as she climbs. She needs a place to turn around and head the other way, but a boiling river hundreds of feet below waits for her to make one careless mistake. Logic and composure are Angela Madigan's greatest assets. But on this dark night neither of those strengths will help her after she takes a sharp turn on the mountain road and accidentally runs over and kills a homeless man. If her rich husband discovers her lover, she'll lose the security and wealth she's struggled her whole life to achieve. If the law finds out, she could lose her freedom. The regrettable decisions that Angela makes to cover up the killing of that man will smash her life into pieces and change her life completely and forever.
