The worst blizzard of the decade brought something dark within and caught the citizens of Hillbrand by surprise. Harry ignored the warnings when he went for a milk delivery the morning the storm began. By the time he realized the storm was only the beginning, it was already too late to escape. An abandoned child with a price on her head turned Hillbrand into a witch-hunt. No witnesses could survive. Maximilian was an old demon in charge of the cleaning crew tasked with dealing with the Hillbrand anomaly and the witnesses.

Holidaying with his friends the Hoggetts in High Gimmerdale while on a trip to find some farmland for his retirement, Robert Macdonald agrees to help in investigating the identity of the sheep-stealers, before being dragged into a case requiring his full experience as Chief Inspector of Scotland Yard.
