With the journey to Penthos nearly over, Rilex and newly-named Severine wake in each other's arms. Something has changed between them, but with the danger still building around them and so many more questions to answer, neither is sure they are ready to find out exactly what. As the ship prepares to land, they part to get ready, and Severine overhears a conversation that brings all of the changes that she is facing crashing around her. In an instant, she can no longer see the future that she thought she might be building, and she wonders if she can ever really get beyond her origins.

Still separated by the planets where they are, Maxim and Ivy long for one another as they face some of the greatest challenges of their lives. On Penthos, a discovery on the ship creates chaos and causes Maxim to reach out to Avery for help, hoping he can rely on the knowledge of the human pilot to keep everyone safe. It is the words of his father, however, that remind him that his greatest priority is still the woman he loves and the life that they are building together. When he sets out on a mission by himself, he encounters danger that might take all of it away forever.

With the hatching of the Covra young beginning, the group from the Denynso compound is hurrying to get to the settlement as fast as they can. When a comment from Ivy makes Zsilvia think differently about the Light Ones and their locked state, a single communication with the men changes everything. Now the warriors are fighting a battle they hadn't prepared to fight, and together, they must decide whether it is more important to preserve lives that began long ago, or eliminate the threat to those who are still just getting started.

Feeling the effects of the decision that he made to leave the Order, Malcolm is trying to get accustomed to being away from the hierarchy and in the home of the beautiful but strange woman that Athan chose. The tension between them is obvious, but he has no choice but to accept the shelter that she has offered or face the danger posed by an angered and betrayed Order. Neither fully trusts the other and both must learn to either compromise and embrace the feelings that are growing between them, or put everything that they all have been working for at risk.

Terrified by what he has realized about the Light Ones, Lynx knows that he needs help. With most of the men gone, including Pyra and Ciyrs, Lynx turns to Ero who convinces him that he needs to reach out to the women to get more of their help. Away from the settlement, Pyra and the others have nearly lost hope for finding the kingdom, but when they do discover it, they are stunned at the species that lives there and the stories that they tell of the Light Ones from generations past.

It is the night before Rey, and the group of humans and warriors will return to the settlement to free the Mikana, and just days before, the others will climb aboard the shuttles headed for Earth so that they can celebrate Samira and Ty's long-awaited wedding. Everyone is coming down from the adrenaline of the last few days and trying to decide what they should do.

Suddenly surrounded by the fearsome-looking Covra, Lynx can only think of protecting Rain. Still trying to process that this beautiful woman is human, the warrior only cares that she is intended to be his mate, and fights off the spider-like creatures coming into the room, but soon falls victim to their horrifying form of warfare. Bannack and Pyra must race to find Ciyrs and heal Lynx before he is lost to the Covra. Back at the Denynso compound, the women are struggling to deal with their emotions of having their mates so far away.

On both Uoria and Earth, the groups are in turmoil. Maxim, Kyven, and the others travel to the compound to consult Creia about the Order, only to find that he has left. On the settlement, Rain is determined to understand more of what happened leading up to the crash and has brought Lynx back to the crash wreckage in hopes of finding a box that may contain this information. On Earth, Eden can't get the image of the strange picture out of her mind. She knows that it means something, but she can't decide what.

Sweetest, nurturing Ty has been looking forward to finding his mate his entire life, but now that he is facing that exact situation, he doesn't know what to do. The student that came to Uoria with Zuri when the professor returned to be with Ero is stunningly beautiful, but is also so young. He doesn't want to take advantage of her, but the longer she is on the planet, the more he realizes that she is the one for him.

As those that returned to Earth continue to prepare for Ty and Samira's wedding, Eden encounters a group of women from the university who are startled to see her, but will not tell her why. Suspicious that they know what is happening, she goes to the laboratory to confront Ryan and discovers that the motivations behind him sending her to Uoria are far more complex than she could have imagined.

Still reeling from the final battle that eliminated the Klimnu and took one of their own, the Denynso warriors gather to honor the life of Jem and talk about the strange discovery of the mirror world beneath the compound. One warrior, volatile and unpredictable Bannack is enraged by the existence of the other realm and the realization that none of them, not even their king, knew that it was there. Eagerly anticipating the arrival of his first child, Pyra finally agrees with Bannack, realizing that what he doesn't know about, he can't keep away from his baby.

Across Uoria, secrets are being revealed, as Lila, Maxim, and Creia continue to dig into the past to understand what happened on the planet years before and what might happen if they don't work to stop it. As they finally unveil who has captured Creia and why, they realize that they need to leave Uoria in order to have a chance to save it.

The threat of the Covra gone, the Denynso are trying to help the Light Ones pick up the pieces and move forward. As Lynx spends more time with Rain he realizes that as deeply as he loves her, he doesn't really know much about her. Together they decide that it is time that they all talk about what happened and try to understand how this situation came to be. As they are gathering in the meeting hall with everyone else now in the settlement, two of their number are missing.

The Covra seem to be gone, but Loralia's cryptic warning is still lingering with the men. As Ciyrs works on healing Ty and Vax and Lynx searches his dreams for Rain, all of the men know that the time is counting down on their ability to save all of the Light Ones. Without knowing what they were thinking or why they chose to lock the people of the settlement rather than killing them, however, they worry that they won't be able to release them from their binds in time.

As Jonah continues to delve into what the mysterious patient files and the pristine examination room in the abandoned medical ward might mean, his mind keeps wandering back to the woman he encountered in the hallway outside of the lab. It was only a brief encounter, but one that left a lasting impression. When he sees her again, it might have lasting influence on the work that he is trying to accomplish and the life that he may have now that he is back on Earth.
