There is some disagreement as to their quality, and some claim that Conan Doyle was writing more experimentally, rather than to the conventional Sherlock Holmes formula. At first reluctant to get involved in such a petty matter, he is persuaded at last and proceeds to unravel a mystery that spans the Atlantic and involves a secret Italian society of murderers and blackmailers. Whether or not you agree with these articles/essays, H G Wells does make many valid points about the war, and it's effect on people, especially in Britain.
