This book reveals, for the first time, the story behind the writing of ‘Desiderata’. Beloved by millions, the poem was first published in 1927, but its true origins, along with the life of its author, have largely been lost to literary history. This account by actor and author Tim Dalgleish includes not only the story of ‘Desiderata’ but two additional, previously unpublished, chapters from a forthcoming biography of Max Ehrmann. This new material helps bring Max Ehrmann, the author of 'Desiderata', out of the shadows.

This is a brief account of an ordinary soldier's experiences at Ypres during the early part of World War I. Reginald Davis was a young boy who worked at the publishers Hodder & Stoughton, but like many others of his generation left his workplace to join the army and fight at Ypres and the Somme. It was John Ernest Hodder Williams who, after Davis returned to the offices of Hodder & Stoughton as one of the war-wounded — minus fingers and with other injuries — decided to put Davis' experiences between two covers.

This new version of the tragedy of Electra combines the plot lines of the three great tragedians Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides with a sprinkle of Eliot, a dab of Keats, a hint of Shakespeare, an essence of the Eurythmics, Walt Whitman, Nietzsche and others. It presents a feast of blood, anger, love, fear, fateful doubt, revenge and beautiful chaos. Tim Dalgleish and Sally Luff with Carabosse Theatre Company have created a modern take on one of the most profound myths of Ancient Greece.

The Winnowing-Fan by Laurence Binyon was the original book of poetry within which ‘For the Fallen’ first appeared. Now used in Remembrance Day services, it is today his most famous poem. This new edition of the book includes newspaper articles and reviews, which historically re-contextualise the poems. A brief introduction and annotations to individual poems clarify both period detail and Binyon’s biographical perspectives.
