And that God may be acceptably approached by sinners only through the mediation of his Son.

Archibald Alexander (1772-1851) was a Presbyterian theologian and professor at the Princeton Theological Seminary. As a pastor and student of the Bible, Archibald Alexander came to appreciate the different ways that people experience the new birth and its effects. In his book on religious experience, he observed that there is unity and diversity to the conversion experience, and that there is no more important event which occurs in our world than the new birth of an immortal soul.

In this sermon, Archibald Alexander deals with fasting, based on inter alia Isaiah 58:3-5 and Joel 2:12-13. He argues that external fasting, without corresponding internal penitence and humiliation, is hypocrisy and that fasting must be accompanied by true humility.

Archibald Alexander begins this sermon by defining grace particularly as it concerns God’s grace to mankind. The sermon is based on 2 Peter 3:18, and in particular the exhortation to “grow in grace.” It is, as Alexander notes, “as if he had said, increase in holiness, or advance in piety.

He also proposed plans for universal education, pensions, poverty relief, and social welfare in this classic work that was widely read across the West.

The work begins by exploring French society before the revolution, claiming that the cause was economic injustice and lack of economic growth. It considers the phases of the revolution, its victims and villains, and the intellectuals involved. Finally, the rise and dictatorship of Napoleon Bonaparte is discussed.

Archibald Alexander was a 18th- and 19th-century American Presbyterian theologian and professor at the Princeton Theological Seminary. The evidences of the Christian religion explore the presence of religion in life, nature, and man. Archibald Alexander decrees that God is the only being who justifies. He stresses that justification is an instrument of Christ, and thus is by faith alone.

Alexander writes this prose to speak directly to the poor man, to tell them not to envy their rich neighbors as their wealth only brings evil. He continues, that the matter of your soul should come first and foremost and not worldly goods. He feels, truly, that nothing in life is exempt from troubles - rich or poor.
