In the vast and mystical lands of Alterra, angels—rare supernatural beings born through a profound bond called unity with humans—are whispered of in legends. For 17-year-old Noah, unity with an angel was the last thing on his mind. Content as a small-time mercenary in the quiet village of Berrios, his life is upended when the mighty nation of Engvall, a dominant force in Alterra, demands his service in their army.

Minisc Premier has never wanted to be like his father. Most kids would kill to have the Hero of Light, the most famous Elementalist in history, as their dad. Minisc hates the pressure, though, and wants only to bring his mother’s dying wish to life: unity and peace between humans and Elementalists, the recently evolved species capable of controlling and wielding elements such as light, fire, and water.

Meet Ruby. She's your average (somewhat dorky) ice-cream eating, garden-loving teenager, who is constantly being annoyed by her little brother, is best friends with possibly the only Goth kid in town and, oh yeah...she sees fairies. After Nick Martino (possibly the hottest guy she's ever known) finally asks her out, she can barely manage a two-word sentence when a bizarre incident strikes their lakeside town. Stumbling bare-foot through some interesting dates, will she ever find love?
