Fyodor Dostoyevskys brilliant short masterpiece delves into the mind of a ranting, slightly unhinged civil servant. With its striking stylistic inventiveness and sharp insights into the absurdities and frailties of human nature, this work feels remarkably contemporary. If it were published today, it would undoubtedly be hailed as an avant-garde post-modern triumph. While the text is rich with conversational philosophizing, the vividness and humor of the narrator make it a captivating and entertaining read. (Review by Hugh McGuire)

The Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson and the Reverend Robinson Duckworth rowed in a boat, on 4 July 1862, up the Isis with the three young daughters of Henry Liddell, (the Vice-Chancellor of Oxford ...

Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s short masterpiece about a ranting, slightly mad civil servant. The stylistic inventiveness, and the insights into the absurdities and weakness of humans seem so fresh and incisive today that if published now (a century and a half later) Notes would be considered an avant-garde post-modernist triumph. In some ways this is a heavy text, laden with conversational philosophizing; but the vividness of the narrator make it a wonderful read, and funny.(Review by Hugh McGuire)

Dive into Notes from Underground, Fyodor Dostoyevskys groundbreaking 1864 novella that many regard as the first existentialist novel. This compelling work unfolds through the fragmented memoirs of an unnamed and disillusioned narrator—known as the Underground Man—who reflects on his life as a retired civil servant in St. Petersburg. The first part of the narrative is a provocative monologue that critiques emerging Western philosophies, particularly Nikolay Chernyshevskys What Is to Be Done?. In the second part, titled Àpropos of the Wet Snow, we encounter poignant events that challenge ...
