But that he endured the ongoing horror with an open heart, with love and without vitriol, and has written about it so beautifully is truly miraculous. This is Gad Beck's story.

1941. Steven Katz is the son of prosperous landowners in rural California. Although his parents don’t approve, he’s found true friends in Nick, Suki, and Ollie, sons of field workers. The group is inseparable. But Steven is in turmoil. He’s beginning to acknowledge that his feelings for Nick amount to more than friendship. When the bombing of Pearl Harbor draws the US into World War II, Suki and his family are forced to leave their home for the internment camp at Manzanar. Ollie enlists in the army and ships out. And Nick must flee.

At Home, Chad minds fresh eggs. And he’s really bad at it. His breakage ratio might improve if he had clean sheets. Or a bed. Or socks. Or shoes. And definitely some band-aids would go a long way to adjusting his mood. At Home, Chad finds no allies among men. Klint, former all-star tormentor of Saw Creek High, is all-in on the communal farm they tend along with Beck, a kid on the spectrum - who doubles as Juni’s look-out.
