For years the Georgetown University Center for Global Health Science and Security has curated an interactive online tool for professionals that identifies the activities involved across all phases of an outbreak. The Georgetown Outbreak Activity Library (GOAL) captures what needs to get done, when, and by whom. Now, in The Outbreak Atlas, Rebecca Katz and Mackenzie S. Moore have translated this complex material into a book designed for a public audience.

Physicians lead. It's an integral part of what they do. They lead patients, they lead healthcare teams, they lead colleagues, departments, and organizations. But most doctors receive very little training in leadership. Leon E. Moores, MD, DSc, FACS is a neurosurgeon and seasoned healthcare leader who literally wrote the book on physician leadership for the U.S. Army. A West Point graduate, Moores became an officer and a surgeon in the Army and recognized how the lack of formal leadership training for doctors impacts physician effectiveness, team performance, and patient outcomes.

For most of human history, mental illness has been largely untreatable. Sufferers lived their lives - if they survived - in and out of asylums, accumulating life's wreckage around them. In 1948, all that changed when an Australian doctor and recently returned prisoner of war, working alone in a disused kitchen, set about an experimental treatment for one of the scourges of mankind - manic depression, or bipolar disorder. That doctor was John Cade and in that small kitchen he stirred up a miracle.

In this lecture, Thomas Moore — internationally known theologian and author of New York Times best sellers Care of The Soul, Soul Mates, and A Life At Work, among other titles — talks about his views on extending the scope of medicine beyond the scientific to include spirituality and deep matters of soul. While a purely scientific approach to medicine can work well in and of itself, Moore also considers the importance of emotions, fantasies, dreams, the physical healing environment, and the relationship of caregiver and patient.
