Monte Sole. Mountain of the Sun. A 2,000-foot peak in the Apennines, fifteen miles south of Bologna, where tenant farmers tended their fields, priests served their parishes, and families had lived for generations. On the morning of September 29, 1944, the SS came. Over three days, soldiers of Walter Reder's 16th Waffen-SS Reconnaissance Battalion, acting with the full authorization of Field Marshal Albert Kesselring, systematically killed nearly 1,800 men, women, and children. Among the dead were 45 children under the age of two.

In our world today, suffering and uncertainty seems to prevail. Interestingly, the book of Lamentations offers a profound and poignant exploration of the human experience. This ancient text, from the prophet Jeremiah, is a gut-wrenching and heart-wrenching expression of grief, sorrow, and longing.

Jan Gross' hugely controversial Neighbors was a historian's disclosure of the events in the small Polish town of Jedwabne on July 10, 1941, when the citizens rounded up the Jewish population and burned them alive in a barn. The massacre was a shocking secret that had been suppressed for more than 60 years, and it provoked the most important public debate in Poland since 1989. Part history, part memoir, The Crime and the Silence is the journalist's account of these events.

In 1948, after surviving World War II by escaping Nazi-occupied France for refugee camps in Switzerland, the author's grandparents, Anna and Armand, bought an old stone house in a remote, picturesque village in the South of France. Five years later, Anna packed her bags and walked out on Armand, taking the typewriter and their children. Aside from one brief encounter, the two never saw or spoke to each other again, never remarried, and never revealed what had divided them forever.

The life story of a Holocaust survivor: his prewar childhood in Czechoslovakia, his experiences in eight Nazi concentration camps, his liberation and emigration to the US, and his career as a General Motors engineer, a Christian minister, and a consummate teacher. For Walter Ziffer, who today considers himself a Jewish secular humanist, life has always been a search for meaning. His compelling and insightful memoir distills the experiences of a remarkable man.
