The year is 1745, and Prince Charlie of the defeated royal house of Stuart, has just returned to Scottish soil. A weighty choice faces every Scottish man. Should he stitch a white cockade to his hat and join the fight to restore James, Prince Charlie's father to the British throne? Or should he stay at home and back George II, the reigning king? One Lowland family, the Duries of Durisdeer and Ballantrae, believe they've found a clever way to sidestep the decision.

In the sequel to Kidnapped, David Balfour's story continues as he becomes further caught up in the political conspiracy of the "Appin Case." He must defend himself and James Stewart of the Appin murder; not an easy task because the Campbells want James Stewart to hang.

Catriona, first published in 1893, is the sequel to Kidnapped and continues the adventures of David Balfour and his friend Alan Breck. Balfour returns to the city in order to defend Breck against false charges in the Appin murder. In so doing, he becomes a pawn in a game between feuding Scottish clans; he also sets eyes on a young woman whose involvement in the same matter becomes as central to his actions as his desire to vindicate his comrade in arms.
