Forensic pathologist Richard Pryor uses his 'golden handshake' to set up in private practice with scientist Angela Bray. A friendly coroner gives them a start, and when two women both claim that human remains found near a reservoir are their relatives, the dilemma is given to them to investigate. Set in 1950’s post-war Britain, this thrilling new series is set during the emergence of forensic science.

When a body is discovered in the harbour town of Axmouth, Sir John de Wolfe, the county coroner, is summoned to investigate. The manner of the young man's death is a matter of some dispute - but, as Sir John soon discovers, it was no accident. The victim did not drown, as the manor reeve alleges, but was strangled. In the ensuing investigation, Sir John is frustrated by what appears to be a conspiracy of silence among the seamen and townsfolk. Just what is the local population trying to hide?

My past is my nightmare. It’s something I can’t escape, the memories haunting me whenever I close my eyes. I have a dark secret digging its claws deeper into my soul each day. It’s the reason I isolate myself, never allowing anyone to get too close. Except Max. Forever my good friend. He has secrets too. I can see them in his eyes, the darkness of unspoken mysteries that mirrors my own. So many years looking over my shoulder, waiting for my past to catch me. All was quiet and foolishly, I started to hope I might be safe. But I was wrong. Dead wrong.
