The Hardy boys looked at one another regretfully. They had just received a letter from their father, Fenton Hardy, an internationally famous detective, who had been called West but a fortnight previous on a mysterious mission. The letter gave the boys their first inkling of the nature of the case that had summoned their father from Bayport, on the Atlantic coast, to the mining country of Montana.

Frank, Joe, and his friends, while ice skating, get caught in a blizzard which results in their finding and befriending a poor old miner who lost his gold to thieves! Their famous detective Dad, Fenton, just happens to be investigating the same missing gold in Montana! He calls the boys to come and help him as he’s injured and bed-bound. They are followed, tricked, and delayed, but ultimately get to Montana where they are attacked by wolves in abandoned mines, and finally begin Hunting for Hidden Gold!

While their father, Fenton Hardy, is in Montana working on a case of stolen gold, the Hardy Boys and their friends meet Jadbury Wilson, a former gold prospector. Wilson relates his tale of how Bart Dawson, a trusted member of his party, disappeared with four bags of hard-won gold during a gunfight. Frank and Joe are thrilled to receive a telegram from their father, requesting that they join him in Montana immediately to assist on the gold case. But to their surprise, Fenton Hardy is working for Bart Dawson, the same man whom Jadbury Wilson has accused of having stolen his gold.
