On the first day of school, 10-year-old Jeffrey and his six-year-old brother, Tyler, climbed out of the school bus at the foot of their driveway, walking into their home, excited about the first day of school. Instantly, their anticipation for the family back-to-school celebration turned to horror as they found their father murdered, stabbed and shot in a laundry room awash with blood. With a rush of adrenaline and terror, Jeffrey hid his younger brother, huddled behind the couch, and called 911 where his mother had worked for years.

Although death is an inevitable part of life, how we choose to be with the dying and the bereaved is up to us. I encourage you to prepare and to embrace the possibility of a lovingly supported transition and, to that end, I include some resources that may help you. Being ready to be with is a wonderful way to live.

Losing someone is heartbreaking, but losing someone as prominent in our lives as our fathers changes us forever. Some of these ladies are in the beginning and you can feel their pain and anger, and sense of disconnection with the rest of the world, yet you will also hear stories of those who have had time to process and heal and grow. It's my hope that their stories will also give you hope to see that while, yes, this does change who you are at your core forever... it changes you for the better.
