Still reeling from recent events in the intergalactic cold war, former Earth resident Austin Stone enters a new phase of his career as a Star Runner with the Galactic Legion of Planets by joining the covert squadron known as the "Scorpions." The training is demanding and rigid, pushing him to the limits as he continues to improve his natural skill at the stick of a Trident starfighter.

War is almost upon the Alliance of four races. The window to prepare themselves for the invasion of the terrifying Morohta armies grows narrower each day. Colonel Mitch Taylor remains in recovery from the horrendous wounds he suffered at the hands of a Morohta prince. Lieutenant Jones leads sweeps throughout Alliance territory, watching and waiting. All fear the arrival of Queen Bolormaa and her sadistic sons, together with the vast armies they command.

The Alliance of the Human, Krys, Aranui, and Cholan peoples lies in tatters after they turn on one another when a new threat emerges. The enemy is the Morohta, led by their fearsome queen, Bolormaa. A hard-fought battle buys the Alliance valuable time until the Morohta force the submission of the Cholan Empire. The Cholans then point their guns at the Alliance and demand their surrender.

Four centuries have passed since the end of the alien invasion that almost destroyed humanity. The surviving races, human and alien, now live in peace as allies. But when a terrifying new enemy cuts a path of destruction through the Alliance, there seems little hope of resistance. The situation is desperate, and desperate measures are required. With reluctance, they agree to resurrect a hero from the past, Colonel Mitch Taylor.
