Deep in the uncharted jungles of Africa, a child is orphaned —and raised not by men, but by apes. In Tarzan of the Apes, Edgar Rice Burroughs introduces one of literature’s most enduring heroes: a man caught between two worlds. Raised in the wild yet driven by an innate curiosity, Tarzan teaches himself to read from abandoned books, discovers his human identity, and ultimately faces a choice between civilization and the life he has always known.

An adventure tale that has capture the ages! The first book in the legendary Tarzan series tells the story of John Clayton, born in the coastal jungles of Africa to a marooned couple from England, adopted as an infant by apes after they die, then raised in ignorance of his human heritage. Through sheer force of will Tarzan becomes king of the jungle and slowly learns of his origin. This is the exciting novel that began it all.

Tarzan's courtship of the female ape Teeka ends in failure when her preference turns to their mutual friend, the male ape Taug. Tarzan wrestles with his humanness versus his ape-ness. The allusion to Helen of Troy enriches the story, making Tarzan and Taug's fight over Teeka take on symbolic proportions. Stan Galloway writes: "when Burroughs chooses to name Helen as an objective correlative for Teeka, he expects both literal and emotional connections to occur." Tarzan's final claim of the story - "Tarzan is a man. He will go alone." - echoes the plight of Adam in the Garden of Eden.

"The Beasts of Tarzan" is a novel by American writer Edgar Rice Burroughs, the third in his series of twenty-four books about the title character Tarzan. Originally serialized in All-Story Cavalier magazine in 1914, the novel was first published in book form by A. C. McClurg in 1916.

Tarzan is taken captive by the warriors of a village of cannibals which has established a village near the territory of the ape tribe. He is saved from them by Tantor, the elephant.

Teeka and Taug have a baby (balu, in the ape language), which Teeka names Gazan and will not allow Tarzan near. She changes her mind after Tarzan saves the baby from a leopard.
