  • 30: Lori Silverman: not just decisions: Actions!
    Dec 18 2019

My guest today is Lori Silverman. Lori is not a data person as such: she specialises in getting organisations to shift. And she has some fascinating things to say around how data stories are told.

I first encountered Lori’s work in the early 2000s when I read Wake Me Up When the Data is Over, a book on story telling which is even more relevant today. She has written a few others: here’s a link to her author page on Amazon. And visit her website Business-Storytelling.com for more information about her.

    Lori and I talk about:

    • data science vs decision science
    • the future of data and decision-making
    • the qualities of an excellent data person (scientist, analyst, whatever)
    • strategic thinking.

In reviewing the transcript I found it hard to not highlight almost every sentence for an interesting nugget. I hope you’ll enjoy it too!

  • 29: Chris Crook: Targeted curiosity
    Dec 18 2019

Chris Crook from Nature Research is my guest today. Nature Research just won a B&T, and the award itself looks quite beautiful, quite casually hanging out with the mags in their foyer.

Read on or listen in and find out about client intimacy, targeted curiosity, the importance of the middle ground role between super-technical and the client: the data translator role.

As usual I had a ball recording this: let me know what you think!

  • 28: Gabe Mach: Nothing you can't fix with numbers
    Nov 5 2019

Gabe Mach is my guest on this podcast. Gabe is one of IAPA's top 25 leaders in 2019. He's entertaining, interesting and thought-provoking.

His background is in digital marketing and is refreshingly candid about his desire to make money to feed his family and have a nice life.

Our discussion touches on climate change (and the need for climate change management!), the supremacy of knowing how to learn and admitting you don't know.

  • 27: Nate Watson: Math is the cultural equalizer
    Oct 8 2019

In this podcast with Nate Watson, we talk how urgent it is for organisations to start using their data for decisions.

You've only got a few years, so choose your data science leaders carefully, the next one is pivotal!

He says that data people are special because they're not a single beast but a hybrid of 4 different domains, and that you must never let a data analyst get bored, or they'll surprise you with information you may not necessarily want to know.
