    Jun 8 2026

What show would your dad write fan fiction about?

In this episode, we put that question to Chrissy Derbyshire, and complete the Barry Derbyshire trilogy. And what better way to complete that trilogy than by discussing Barry's hobbies?

In the episode, Chrissy tells us about Barry's passion for writing, including the 9 books that he's self-published, the children's books he used to write just for Chrissy, and the one and only poem he ever wrote. She also tells us about Barry's blues harmonica abilities (including the time he channelled 'The Blues Brothers' at a church party), and some of his favourite ways to annoy and embarrass Chrissy. We also dive deep into Barry's love for trolling flat earthers online, the fact that he used to be a Christian, and that he went to school with 3/4 of the band, 'The Who.'

Also in this episode, Chrissy tells us about her Christian upbringing as a self-described "horrible creep of a child, and her own hobby of writing 'Taskmaster' fan fiction. Joe reveals his crush on Steve from 'The Repair Shop,' and tells the story of the time he got ousted from a flat earther Facebook group for being ironic. Max defends '24 Hours in Police Custody' against Joe's ignorant attack, and his experiences with watching flat earther ASMR YouTube videos.

  • 30. 'Barry'd at First Sight' - The Dad Who's An Honorary Black Man (ft. Chrissy Derbyshire)
    Jun 1 2026

Does the body rule the mind or does the mind rule the body? We dunno!

But what we DO know is that Chrissy Derbyshire has returned to the Dadpod studio to spill more of her father's proverbial beans. That father is, of course, Barry Derbyshire! The former London bus driver who, although he would describe himself as a "boring old fart," as we find out in this episode, is anything but.

In the episode, Chrissy tells us how Barry his her biggest fan and supporter of her comedy career, driving her to almost all of her gigs, even travelling as far as Sheffield and Dorset. Chrissy also talks about Barry's lovely Zimbabwean wife: the story of the moment he fell in love with her, his regular travels to Zimbabwe, plus his "honorary black man" status despite being "the whitest man you'll ever see."

Chrissy also recounts her experience at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, describes her own biological daughter as "derpy cringe," and tells the tale of her worst ever comedy gig, which just so happened to be exactly where Max and Joe were due to perform the week after recording.

Finally, the gang share stories about their lives in the comedy world: writing for BBC Radio Wales, the times when people have tried to give them jokes, plus Joe shares the story of an awkward car share with a dreary comedian who kept talking about all times they'd bombed and how badly that night's gig was about to go.

ABOUT OUR GUEST: "Chrissy is the world's most giggly deadpan comedian, and probably the only comedian to be compared to both Sarah Millican and David Lynch. Her solo show, Innards, is coming to the Edinburgh Fringe this year". (Whistlebinkies @ 11:15 Aug 20th-Aug 30th)
