We are not able to reconcile ourselves to God. He completely reconciled all things, including us, to Himself by the work of Christ, resulting in peace. He makes us new creatures on the inside while we are still in the same decaying sinful bodies. Sin is a universal disease for mankind, and we are in an ongoing process of coming short of the glory of God. It is only because of Christ's obedience to pay the price for us in His work at the cross that we are able to be in right standing before God. The law had to be there so we would know that there are consequences for sin – the wrath of God – but our salvation does not come through the law. Paul is addressing two groups of people, their reaction to the cross and what that reaction produces. Although both products sound static in the English, the Greek reveals both are processes. To those who have rejected Christ, the cross is moronic and has produced the process of perishing. To those who have trusted Christ, the cross is the reality of life eternal that human ability cannot obtain.
