Mary is imprisoned on North Brother Island for three years without trial. In 1910, she's released with conditions: never cook again and report regularly. She attempts laundry work but the poverty wages prove unbearable. By 1911, Mary disappears from monitoring, her desperation driving her back toward the forbidden kitchens that will seal her fate.
