This week on Two Girl Cinema Club, we share all our thoughts on “Wuthering Heights”. Much to our surprise, enjoying the movie is a controversial take! Hannah also watched Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model and Love is Blind Ohio. We watched ANTM when it originally aired, so maybe we have a different perspective on the early 2000s reality tv, but we aren’t hopping on the ANTM hate train. Ailish also shared that Mia Goth and Andrew Scott are set to film FONDA and Jacob Elordi is rumored to have been offered James Bond by Amazon.

Sandra Bullock was America’s darling for a couple decades and continues to be a household name today. This week, we watched a couple early romcoms of hers and the one that’s the most popular. Hope Floats is one of Bullock’s earliest films and it stars the iconic Gena Rowlands. This one didn’t really work for us overall, and we didn’t feel the chemistry or script worked well. We were surprised to see Forest Whitaker directed this film after watching Waiting to Exhale last week! While You Were Sleeping actually has a very strange and creepy plot, but it’s excused by how sweet Bullock is. It’s a pretty classic 90s romcom that makes for a good comfort watch. Finally we have The Proposal. This film really put Ryan Reynolds on the map and it is arguably his best role. Bullock looks unbelievable in this film, but the jokes didn’t land as hard for us this time around.

Continuing with our February theme, Two Girl Cinema Club explored some Breakup Films this week. Some of these films were more iconic than others, but they all brought some unique topics and themes into our conversation. We’re also prepping for “Wuthering Heights” and can’t wait to see it in IMAX this weekend. Ailish also was able to see The Moment and gave her thoughts on Charli xcx’s new endeavor.

We start Breakup Films week with Someone Great. This was very millennial, and not in a good way. Even though it was released in 2019, it felt really dated overall and we would have believed it if someone told us it was filmed in 2002. Waiting to Exhale was a blindspot for both of us, and we were glad we added it to our list. The cast of ladies were relatable and gorgeous, and we loved the inner dialogue of the women playing as a voiceover throughout. Marriage Story and Blue Valentine are in the same vein, but the latter was definitely more impactful. There’s something about the casting and script that feels so much more natural in Blue Valentine, and it’s impossible to not feel the chemistry between Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling.

February is here and we’re celebrating the month of love by watching some tragic love stories unfold on film. Before we talk about these tear-jerkers, we catch up on a few other films we watched this week. Ailish rewatched Uncut Gems and The Place Beyond the Pines, Hannah watched Megan 2.0 and Black Bag for the first time, and we chatted about the rumors surrounding the Safdie Brother’s split.

Ghost is a film with two stars at the center who were at the top of their game. If you say the potter’s wheel scene doesn’t make you swoon, you’re definitely lying! Whoopi Goldberg really steals the show here, but the longing and sorrow depicted by Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze really pulls at your heart strings. It’s hard to believe that the same person who created Avatar, created the masterpiece that is Titanic. What more is there to even say about this film? Leo and Kate Winslet have never looked better, and the score takes your breath away. Our last two films play on your emotions in multiple ways because terminal illnesses come into play. A Walk to Remember is the classic story of young love that is tragically broken apart too soon. Mandy Moore plays the preacher’s daughter well, and Shane West is the perfect bad boy turned good. Finally, we have The Fault in Our Stars. It’s very clear upon rewatching as an adult that this is based on a YA novel. This might have struck us as teens, but it doesn’t translate now that we’re slightly older.

This week on Two Girl Cinema Club, we celebrate Matt Damon! Before we watch a small sampling of his career, we talk briefly about Justin Bieber announcing his Grammy performance and the Wuthering Heights press tour and online discourse. Ailish shares her thoughts after a rewatch of One Battle After Another after watching it with her dad, and Hannah gives her take on Hedda. We’re also joined by a quick special guest to get their take on Sinners and its Oscar chances, give some thoughts on the awards race in general, and talk more about The Ugly Stepsister since Hannah was able to watch it.

We have to be honest, Matt Damon is a household name, but he isn’t the first that comes to mind when we think about big movie stars. Well we were proven wrong this week after watching four of his films and realizing the man has range. We began with We Bought a Zoo which is a wholesome family film that really shows Damon’s fatherly side. Was he even acting here? We can absolutely see why the single moms at school were fawning over him because he’s the husband every woman would love to have. Behind the Candelabra takes us in a completely different direction where we see a side of Damon we’ve never seen before. We have to give a special shoutout to Michael Douglas who has unbelievable chemistry with Damon here! Ford v Ferrari is another role where we see Damon depict a real person. Even though neither of us are big car or racing fans, this is a film we think everyone would be entertained by. Lastly, we watched Damon’s newest film with Ben Affleck, The Rip. You can definitely tell this is a Netflix film, but Damon and Affleck still give great performances.

This week on Two Girl Cinema Club, Broadway comes to our living rooms as we explore some popular musicals. Before we dive into those, we discuss our thoughts on 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple and If I Had Legs I’d Kick You. Since it was a long weekend, we were both able to catch a matinee showing of The Bone Temple, and we were left wondering exactly where the final film in the trilogy is going to go. We both enjoyed the film, but feel you have to look at the 28 Years Later films separately from 28 Days Later. Last week, Hannah watched If I had Legs I’d Kick You, and Ailish was able to watch it so we could discuss it on the pod. There are definite comparisons to Die My Love, and we can’t get over Rose Byrne’s memorable performance. Ailish also caught up with The Ugly Stepsister and Hannah watched a couple documentaries and Bone Lake.

When a musical is done right, it shows on the stage and the screen. Surprisingly, neither of us had seen Hamilton even though it was one of the most acclaimed musicals of all time. Since this was a filmed version of the stage performance, we really felt the magic of the original production and were so impressed by the actor’s abilities. On the flip side, we have tick, tick…BOOM! Unfortunately, this one didn’t land for seven though we did feel that Jonathan Larson’s story is compelling. Maybe the original, one-man show would’ve worked better, but this film adaptation was just trying to do too much. Lastly, we have Little Shop of Horrors. We might have a bit of a soft spot for this musical since we have fond memories of seeing our local high school production when we were in grade school, but this was our first time watching the film version. It’s so cute and well done, and the songs really stick with you!

In this episode of Two Girl Cinema Club, we take a trip to the Westcoast! The films we cover this week showcase Los Angeles and prove why filmmakers are inspired by the city again and again. Before we dive into the City of Angeles, we touch on some highlights from the Golden Globes, some industry news, and two extra movies we watched this week: If I Had Legs I’d Kick You and Oh, Hi!

We Love LA! To start this week’s theme, we watched Mulholland Drive. This is an iconic film by David Lynch that left us confused, mesmerized, and Googling fan theories. We both agreed that this neo-noir warrants a second viewing to really understand it. Nightcrawler is arguably one of Jake Gyllenhaal’s best performances. He’s so good in these freaky little roles, and the concept keeps you engaged the entire time. Tangerine is one of Sean Baker’s well-known, early films, and it was all shot on an iPhone. At first, it definitely showed and we weren’t sure about the acting/script. As it went on, the film grew on us, but there were some characters and storylines that worked better than others. Lastly, we have Boyz n the Hood. We couldn’t believe this film was made by a 23-year-old John Singleton. It’s one that doesn’t really have a solid plot, but because it feels so real, you end up so emotionally invested by the end. A true gem with some great performances.

It’s Timothée Chalamet Week in honor of Marty Supreme and the awards race. The Critics Choice Awards happened last week, so we briefly touched on some of the surprise wins, including Timmy for Best Actor. We also discussed some of the other films we caught up with over the week. Ailish watched the Netflix documentary, The Perfect Neighbor, and Hannah watched Challengers, Uncut Gems, and Bad Guys. It was a great time to talk about Uncut Gems since there have been so many comparisons to what the Safdie Brothers did there and what Josh Safdie did with Marty Supreme. We also talk about the, very disappointing, Stranger Things finale episode and “Conformity Gate”. Is anyone else still holding out hope that a 9th episode will come, or are we just being delusional?

Our theme this week was Timothée Chalamet, so we watched some films where he played smaller roles and his breakout film. We started with Hot Summer Nights which we had both heard of, but didn’t know too much about. Unfortunately, this one wasn’t great even though Timothée did give a good performance. A Rainy Day in New York is one of the most controversial films in Timmy’s filmography because of the allegations against Woody Allen. While this film had some really beautiful settings, the writing fell flat for us and the overall story just didn’t work at all. Bones and All was definitely better compared to the first two we watched. Again, we thought Timothée gave a great performance, but there was something missing for us. The film that made Timothée Chalamet a star is definitively Call Me by Your Name. Ailish had never seen this one before, but this was a rewatch for Hannah. This one blows us away from beginning to end and it’s clear to see that Timmy was a star right from the beginning.

We’re back after a holiday break for the last part of Harry Potter Holiday! We meant to break this into two parts, but we both were plagued by sickness for a bit longer than we anticipated. In this episode, we also cover Christmas Evil, HIM, and Hannah drops some news on an unexpected collab between M. Night Shyamalan and Nicholas Sparks. We also watched Four Christmases to round out the season since it’s one of our favorite Christmas films. This one is a little controversial and doesn’t have the best reviews, but we think this one is so funny and the chemistry between Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn is great.

We had a lot to cover this episode since we had four Harry Potters to discuss! It had been a little while since we watched The Order of the Phoenix and The Half-Blood Prince, so our memories were a little fuzzy. The holidays took a lot out of us okay?! We then moved onto Parts 1 & 2 of The Deathly Hallows which really blend together to make one, epic finale. We really can’t speak enough on the chemistry of this cast and how the friendship between Harry, Ron, and Hermione makes the movies what they are. When one isn’t there, you really feel something is missing, even though the characters are still good in their own right. Comparing Harry Potter and Stranger Things is really interesting because they’re examples of child actors growing into great and not so great adult actors.
