Despite multiple psychiatric admissions, Kappler was able to continue practicing medicine without any consequences or reports to the medical board. The lack of accountability and disclosure in the healthcare system allowed for these incidents to occur and put patients at risk. It all came to a head when he committed a violent act killing one and severely injuring another. This conversation explores untreated mental illness, the role of Kappler's wife, Tommie, in enabling his behavior and covering up his mental health issues. The conversation also delves into the legal and ethical questions surrounding the criminal responsibility of individuals with mental illness who commit crimes, and those who choose not to comply with treatment. Overall, the case raises important discussions about the stigma of mental illness and the need for proper support and intervention.
