    In Part One of this two-part series, we dive into the disturbing case of Maureen “Miki” McDermott — a respected nurse, devoted mother, and woman known for her kindness and generosity.
    In 1985, Maureen was accused of orchestrating a brutal murder-for-hire plot against her housemate, Stephen Eldridge, alongside a troubled co-worker, Jimmy Luna. Stephen was attacked in his home, stabbed 44 times, and mutilated in a crime staged to look like a hate-fueled act.
    Though she has always maintained her innocence, Maureen was convicted of murder with special circumstances and later sentenced to death. But was she truly the mastermind — or was she manipulated into a deadly situation?

    Ruby was shot and killed by Nicole’s stepfather. In the aftermath, allegations surfaced that he initially lied about what happened. He has since been charged in connection with Ruby’s death and has declined a plea deal, opting instead to take the case to trial.
    What began as an unimaginable personal loss has grown into something larger. The Justice for Ruby movement was born out of grief, advocacy, and a determination to ensure that Ruby’s life mattered. Nicole not only lost her best friend, she also lost her relationship with her mother as the case fractured her family in ways no one could have anticipated.
    In this episode, Nicole shares her journey — the day everything changed, the legal process that followed, the emotional toll of fighting for justice, and why Ruby’s story deserves to be heard. We discuss the charges, the upcoming trial, and the broader issue of accountability in cases involving violence against animals.
