  • The new Biden administration: What does the future look like for a UK/US trade deal?
    Jan 26 2021

President Joe Biden has now been inaugurated as the 46th President of The United States and has a lot on his mind. In our previous podcast we discussed how far down the order of priority a UK/US trade deal might be for the incoming administration. The conclusion we reached that there are at least five or six major issues to be fixed by the Biden Administration ahead of such a trade deal; including, the Global Pandemic, the US economy and rebuilding bridges with Europe and the rest of the world (all as discussed between the then President-Elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in their first interview with CNN following the results of the presidential election).

However, things may have changed following the announcement of the EU/China trade deal immediately after Brexit.

We discussed how this topic could become a political tool used by both sides to promote the multilateral agenda voiced by President Elect Biden during the Presidential debates. We also considered whether this is the thing that will bring the Johnson Government and the Biden Administration together to grow ‘the special relationship’.

  • America decides, how will this impact the UK?
    Nov 2 2020

The interviewees consider, in some detail, the scope of the WTO state aid rules and how these compare and contrast with the EU state aid rules and what difference the outcome of the Presidential election may have on the ability of the WTO Appellate body (currently not fully constituted) to make final determinations and the potential ramifications of this on the EU’s concerns about the UK’s refusal to be bound by the EU state aid rules.

  • The special relationship
    Nov 2 2020

In this first episode, Chip and Patrick interview Marc Gilston from TLT and Seth Stodder from Holland & Knight on the latest updates on the United Kingdom Internal Markets Bill (UKIM) and how this potential piece of UK legislation has been received in the US.

There is a fascinating opinion on the potential differences in obtaining a free trade deal between the UK and US if there is a new Biden administration or a second Trump administration.  The interviewees are also asked their opinions on the potential impacts of the recent WTO decision in the Airbus/Boeing dispute on a future free trade deal between the UK and US and between Europe and the US.
